Thoughts and beginning my journey- will post updates here too!
Quote from AmyN on May 26, 2019, 8:07 amFirst off: Thank you for posting your experiences. I am just starting this vitamin A detox journey.
Secondly: Has anyone used methionine instead of taurine to help bind excess vitamin A?
Finally: After digging deep and reading though both of Grant’s e-books yesterday (all day long!) I am going to begin low vitamin A diet, add in a few supplements on the regular, like zinc, vit C and B vitamins. I’m waffling between methionine and/or taurine as well. I will add one of them in.
Background: A life time of asthma and recurring eczema. Developed several “auto-immune” issues starting in my 30’s. I have been working dietary modifications for at least 30 or so years of my life. Eggs, dairy and citrus have always caused eczema and asthma flare ups. Now I hope that I understand why. Eczema is worse than it’s ever been right now. Recently (maybe 2 weeks ago) I added in fish oil and vitamin A supplements! I stopped that today.
I also began taking CBD oil a few months ago and have had flare ups ever since. It’s a lipsomal delivery system so I am wondering if maybe those liposomes are also working to detoxify the excess A and facilitating the flare ups? Does anyone have any feedback on that?
There are so many questions about causation and not really any clear answers. I am committing to a food log and tracking my skin results and hopefully asthma improvements as well. I will track here and share my findings. Day one hand eczema uploaded for your perusal. It already looks better and is less itchy than last night. I had 2 low/no vitamin A meals yesterday for lunch and dinner.

But if you're eating enough meat, you probably don't need either. Same with B vitamins. You might consider a vitamin E supplement or just add organic cold pressed sunflower oil and sunflower seeds to your diet. Garrett's $40 detox protocol is worth the money IMO.

Quote from Liz on May 27, 2019, 7:49 amI second the detox protocol. It contains so much more info now than it did in the beginning and it is being updated regularly too as he learns/finds new information.

Quote from hillcountry on May 27, 2019, 12:50 pmHi Amy - I researched the Methionine subject at length awhile back and concluded it could be harmful if supplemented. Just do a PubMed search on "Methionine Cancer", or to see the papers on the benefits of "Methionine Restriction" plug that term in to the search box. Here's a recent paper on the ill-effects side of it.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31061538
Taurine on the other hand has a slew of papers indicating it is quite beneficial, but as Josh mentioned above, you may not need any in supplement form. I put together about 50 positive abstracts copied from PubMed that I've passed around to friends who don't eat much meat. I take a capsule every other day, just to be sure, since I eat fairly small quantities of ground buffalo as my primary protein source. Best wishes to you on your journey.

Quote from AmyN on May 27, 2019, 4:41 pm@josh and @liz I will certainly look into the detox protocol you mentioned. I am interested in more details.
@hillcountry many years ago my functional medicine dr. Told me to take methionine for the rest of my life. I can’t remember why but I will look at the paper you linked to and do some more research. I will also look over all my old bloodwork to see if I had some specific markers that would indicate that specific need. I no longer go to that functional medicine practitioner but so far everything that he told me to do back then was spot on, but that was quite a long time ago.

Well, I had some friends over today and one of them is a Nurse. She took one look at my hand (and arm, and leg) where I *think* it’s eczema and she asked how did I get Poison Ivy? Well that’s a plot twist!
My husband and I started talking and it turns out he thinks he has poison ivy too....
My guess is some of what I have is poison ivy and some is eczema. Right now I’m staying on low vitamin A diet and applying super ivy dry to see if it looks better tomorrow. I have never actually had poison ivy so I don’t even know how I react to it or what the rash would look like on me.
