Treating Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Here is a smattering of links I found when I searched on 'wapf "vitamin A" "cold weather" '

"Vitamin A is depleted by stress, excess protein, cold weather, fever and illness, physical exertion and exposure to toxins"

"vitamin A. If you are a child, have diabetes or thyroid issue, consume too much fortified iron, or simply live in a cold weather climate"

"cold weather can hinder the conversion of carotenes to vitamin A. Furthermore, carotenes cannot be converted with a lowfat diet because the conversion takes"

Of course, you must take into account that the WAPF is still in the mind set that vitamin A deficiency is rampant and vitamin A overload is oh-so-rare.

We've gathered here because we think the opposite.    We have come to think it's almost impossible to be deficient on this planet and very easy to be overloaded, and that often what is seen as deficiency is actually overload.

However, it may yet be true that carotenes don't convert as easily in cold weather or in those other conditions mentioned.   And it could also be true that some conditions (such as cold weather) "use up" vitamin A.   Both of which might be useful for us to know.

I realize that sometimes people here think carotenes are less troublesome than the so-called animal-form of vitamin A.    But I have often thought that the whole reason it is converted is because the opposite is true.   The conversion changes it away from being a pigment.     IMO pigments can be very troublesome.   There are areas of my body that are "dyed" and the tissues there seem the worse for the wear, such as armpits, teeth, groin, the skin around the eyes...

Anyways, this could be why several of us VA-overloaded people on this site feel "cold intolerant".   Maybe VA circulates or "gets used" in cold weather and/or maybe carotenes don't convert.   Heck, half my family have packed up and moved to Florida!    These are people whose ancestors have always embraced the cold.

I think VA « gets used » in cold weather because of shivering. Which is why cold baths therapy as I had explained years ago works. Which is why orgasms help too. All these poor young people who suffer post coital pains and cannot enjoy their sex life as they should as their age are burning their private parts with VA excretion. No wonder they cannot conceive.

YIKES!    Ourania you crack me up!   What a post!   Glad to see you.  🙂

I never thought of shivering being a part of this, but of course it is!   When I have one of my problems with rash-less itchiness after sweating, I DO SHIVER, and when I had poison ivy over 1/3 of my body I also shivered.   I shivered during my chronic vomiting attacks.   We all shiver during influenza.

Also my Granny used to make us pee before we got out to play in the cold. She said that would stop us from shivering and feeling cold. It worked perfectly, I think partly because some VA which was available would go away in the pee.

That is super interesting, and my husband has also told me that the cold makes you want to pee.   I never realized it.

As a side note, I saw an interesting point of view the other day that crying helps get rid of excess cortisol.    As we are talking about something called "SAD" ...it just might be related!

In the night I lay awake wondering if shivering results in VA being circulated... or if VA circulating causes shivering.   Maybe both.

Inducing shivering seems to help detox (Ourania's point)

But also circulating VA seems to cause shivering (my chronic vomiting nights)

I'm going to consistently use my local tanning beds every time my mood dips to see if it helps.

My local shop combines IR with UV lights. I'll report back whether it works or not.

I tried that once and got pretty fried so be careful.     I didn't come away with a good experience and didn't go back.     I suppose it will give you vitamin D, but some of this might be just about chronic darkness or chronic coldness and it won't help with that.      Time on lowered-VA will probably also help after a while.
