Ulcerative colitis flare up
Quote from r on November 30, 2021, 11:25 amHi Guys ,
Following a year or two after I became VIT A toxic , I was diagnosed with ULCERATIVE COLITIS. The Initial Flare up happen by consuming red kidney beans , second one was the same . Flare up happens for 2-3 month , during which I would get bloody stools and diarrhea. But I would be on normal low vitamin A diet and it would take its time to heal and after 2-3 months it would magically disappear . That was the time ( start of 2020 ) when I finally learned that red kidney beans aren't for me . So since then I have been on a strict low vitamin A diet and my stools were perfect and no floare up ever happened , until recently , I thought about adding more fiber to my diet ( supposedly to excrete more vitamin A out of my body ) , I started consuming soaked basil seeds ( similar to chia seeds ) and rest I made no changes in my diet ( meat , beans and rice ), but recently I got another bad flare up of ulcerative colitis , and it's still kind of going on ( almost 4 months ) .
Do you guys see any connection between these two foods ( red kidney beans and basil seeds ) and the things they have in common that would actually be the cause of my flare up ( I know its very much related to vitamin A , but specially these only foods trigger it )
Thanks !

Quote from Jiří on December 1, 2021, 4:01 am@salt animals who can't cook them yes. 🙂 But for people I am not so sure if they are so bad like Ray Peat and other carnivore, Paleo etc. people are saying. I was neglecting microbiome and even worse I was trying to kill everything in the gut(Thanks Peat).. Now I think it's another big reason for my health issues. I was on low FODMAP diet for so long and my digestion and mainly pooping is getting only worse. So now I am trying to eat things that feed probiotics so even legumes. I always knew that the goal should be eating everything. Restricting more and more foods will only create more problems down the road.. We need healthy microbiome so our gut walls can be healthy.. So we can eat things like legumes without any issues. The problem for most people is that they don't feed their microbiom and than try to eat a lot of legumes at once. They have issues so they stop again. Also exactly my case.. Now I don't give up so easily. So far no huge problems from high FODMAP foods like apples and beans/lentils. Only anions give me insane gas. That tells me that I need the type of fiber in that onion. I just need to eat smaller amounts to give my friends in the gut time to adjust. 🙂

Quote from Viktor on December 1, 2021, 9:17 amVitamin A toxicity is surely linked to IBD (see the list of side effects of Accutane, for instance https://www.acne.org/accutane.html ).
However, if you already have UC, you have your own trigger foods, which may be perfectly okay for other people with the same condition, and vice versa. I wouldn't over-analyze it and just remove the suspected food from the diet.

This is the problem for most people I would say. They start to react badly to some foods or food groups so they stop eating them. The problem from eating that food is gone, but the reason why there is a problem with that food in a first place is not addressed and we know how it ends. People eat less and less foods and start to react to basically everything.. Like you said vit A can damage colon 100%. So hopefully for r detoxing vit A will be enough to stabilize things so he can start eating more and more different foods.. I really hope that I would be able to fully heal my gut so I can eat even things like products from wheat flour. I love pastry especially sandwiches oh how I would love to eat sandwich for a meal at work or when I am outside. I am tired of that BS cooking starches with meat for every meal... 🙂

be careful with lentils , they are full lutein . Initially I was doing well with lentils , but it slowly shows up its bad effects later . You don't want to be going to square one in your detox progress . Most of us get easily carried away as we start experimenting with different sets of foods after we gave detoxed for a while , but soon we fall into the same trap . Be careful . I would not recomend lentils at all . Stick with black / white beans and foods that have been tried and tested by other people here

"For Ulcerative Colitis, best results can be obtained by drinking about 100 ml of kefir milk and 2-3 grams of live kefir grains. To get the best results, purchase kefir grains and ferment at home, as your grains grow, eat some of them."
Like I said you need healthy microbiome especialy bifidobacteria.. Start making ideally goat milk kefir with kefir grains aka "tibetian mushrooms" and drink smaller amounts every day. The amount of vit A will be negligible and it will give you huge boost in microbiotics much more than you can ever take in supplement form.. You really can't have healthy gut without healthy microbiome..
It's good to hear that eating the kefir grains is also benefitial, because my grains grow like crazy and I had no idea what to do with them now I know. I will add 1 tsp of them to my glass of kefir every day.. 🙂

Red kidney beans are known to contain a great deal of a toxin (lectin) called phytohemagglutinin when improperly cooked. For those that are sensitive there might be some trace amounts of this or something else in the red kidney bean. It could also be something else, maybe more lutein than other beans?
I found it interesting that this toxin, phytohemagglutinin, from red kidney beans are used to increase the differentiatiom of immune system cells like T-cells. This reminds me of retinoic acid also being used for increased cell differentiation in cell cultures. See this 2011 study called "The Significance Application of Indigenous Phytohemagglutinin (PHA) Mitogen on Metaphase and Cell Culture Procedure":
"Phytohemagglutinin (PHA) is a lectin, obtained from the red kidney bean that binds to the membranes of T-cells and stimulates metabolic activity, cell division, etc."
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC3813071/
You could also see that Sigma-Aldrich sells purified phytohemagglutinin (PHA), under 'Description' on the link below they mention that PHA highly stimulates human lymphocytes.
https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/SE/en/product/roche/11249738001
You might be able to find a connection of basil seeds also "stimulating" (hurting) human lymphocytes and that might be one of your body's weak points. I also think there are less problematic beans than kidney beans. See this quote from a 2019 study called "Phytohemagglutinin content in fresh kidney bean in China".
"PHA from fresh kidney beans accounted for 40% of poisoning events induced by poisonous plants in China from 2004 to 2013."

I didn't realize you were talking about red kidney beans, they have plenty of carotenoids.
