Weight gain/weight loss

This summer I inadvertently turned myself into a vitamin A toxicity experiment.

I'm 54 years old and I suspect I've been suffering from periods of vitamin A toxicity for a few years - the ' toxic periods' as shown on Grant's graph in ETFOH chapter 13 page 134 (if like me you are a visual learner & love a graph!). However this summer I took it to another level. For reasons that I won't bore you with I decided that to improve my health I should try supplementing with 5,000iu of retinol palmitate. Not only did I have this marvellous idea (!?!) but after a trip to the opticians I decided to re-start Macushield - a lovely mix of lutein, zeaxanthin etc. Bingo.

My health took a turn for the worse. I started to bizarrely put on weight even though I was eating normally & exercising. My eyes became itchy & gritty. I felt exhausted & my bones started to ache. When I found out about Grant's work through Garrett Smith's client pages I had a lightbulb moment. I immediately stopped the supplements & reduced my vitamin A/carotinoid ingestion and guess what? Well it will be no surprise to you all to learn my symptoms have disappeared & my weight is returning to normal.

Great news!  I'm interested in hearing more about your vision;  do you have a specific vision disorder?  I took Macushield for a degenerative eye disorder, to no avail.  After three months on zero Vitamin A I have had no noticeable vision improvement, but I have had considerable improvement in IBS, bone and joint pain, and fatigue.  ~ds

Hi ds - well that sounds like a great result. My optician recommended the Macushield a few years ago as she detected drusen in one eye - apparently they can be an early sign of AMD. I took it intermittently but it made me feel sick - I thought I should give it another go. Not my best decision!! At least I immediately saw the significance of the vitamin A stuff when I read it even though it gave me cognitive dissonance as I've been studying nutritional therapy for the last 3 years where it's all about 'eating a rainbow'.
