what i have learned during detox

My experience through detox over the last few months based on eating over 1kg of sweet potatoes per day (the orange flesh high in beta carotene), 1-2 litres of milk per day, 3-4 eggs per day, lots of orange juice, colourful veggies and butter and rich tomato pasta sauces and occasional liver...………...all this over the last 5 years. I have been eating a VA free diet for 4 months now.

Initial detox symptoms (occurred 2 weeks into no VA diet and have mostly resolved but still have some):

- flu, fever, chills, tonsillitis infections resistant to antibiotics, watery eyes, itchy eyes, itchy skin, dry skin, bone pains, sensitivity to light and occasional headaches and tingling and slightly numb (pins and needles feeling) in my left hand and was especially bad towards the finger tips.

Sunshine: I have noticed adverse effects after full body exposure to sunshine for 20+ minutes (intentional sun tanning). Feels like a flare up which I associate with RA being released into the system. Symptoms included difficulty falling asleep and intense hay fever / allergy type symptoms like running nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, head fog, watery eyes, blurry vision, intense itching.

Vitamin C: helps with many of the symptoms above and in the studies it looks to do the opposite of what VA/RA does and is "Hepaprotective". It has given me relief especially after sun exposure.

http://chemocare.com/chemotherapy/drug-info/tretinoin.aspx

This drug is Retinoic Acid (Atra) and note the precaution it says not to go in the sun and pregnant woman should not take it. Its basically chemo therapy and destroys tissues and leads to liver failure over time. From the page:

  • You may be at risk of infection so try to avoid crowds or people with colds, and report fever or any other signs of infection immediately to your health care provider.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • When you start taking Tretinoin, you may become dizzy, confused, anxious, or extremely tired. Do not attempt to drive or operate heavy machinery, unless you know how you will respond to Tretinoin.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses if you have dry of irritated eyes.
  • Avoid sun exposure. Wear SPF 30 (or higher) sun block and protective clothing.
  • To reduce nausea, take anti-nausea medications as prescribed by your doctor, and eat small, frequent meals.
  • To help treat/prevent mouth sores, use a soft toothbrush, and rinse three times a day with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of baking soda and/or 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of salt mixed with 8 ounces of water.
  • Keep your bowels moving. Your health care provider may prescribe a stool softener to help prevent constipation that may be caused by Tretinoin.
  • Follow regimen of anti-diarrhea medication as prescribed by your health care professional
  • Eat foods that may help reduce diarrhea (see managing side effects - diarrhea)
  • In general, drinking alcoholic beverages should be kept to a minimum or avoided completely. You should discuss this with your doctor.

Its known to damage the liver so its no wonder it states to avoid alcohol.....

Here is a video of what happens with Accutane and sunshine which is basically huge amount of RA reacting to sunshine.

Hi Jobo your detox symptoms sound very similar to some of mine. Sunshine is one of the things that Garrett Smith terms 'accelerators' i.e. it increases dumping of vitamin A from the liver so that seems to agree with your experience. Speeds up detox maybe but can make you feel ill 🌞
