Why do women comprise 80% of all autoimmune disease cases?

Any theories?

@matthew Well, how about this for a theory.

I now think of autoimmune disease as poisoning.

I'd say that over time I've come to the realization that health/survival is about getting nourished (not to mention clothed and sheltered and doctored) while at the same time not getting poisoned.  I would say that is why "pure" foods such as white rice or even white bread have been revered.  They are clean (comparatively) energy.

Women's bodies have to build up a new uterine wall each month and occasionally develop children and spend years breast feeding... their nutrient needs are actually higher than men.  (in many circumstances, generalizing here).

Perhaps getting rid of the lining is in itself a kind of detox.

So perhaps women get deficient in important nutrients (for instance choline or B1)  that help detoxification...quicker or more often than men do.

Go back about 100 years ago and many medicines contained mercury.    Women were more likely than men to fall sick from this toxicity.   I remember reading an article about it in a WAPF journal.   Women are often the canaries in the coal mine when it comes to toxicity.

"‘In this country it is scarcely an exaggeration to say that every man grows to maturity surrounded by a circle of invalid relatives, that he later finds himself the husband of an invalid wife and the parent of invalid daughters, and that he comes at last to regard invalidism. . . the normal condition of that sex—as if Almighty God did not know how to create a woman.’

Beautiful Black Poison

I'm not actually sure if this is the article I'm thinking of, they have several on mercury.  But I think this shows the gist of it.

since children don't rebuild uterine walls it may be useful to look up incidence of autoimmunity in male vs female children

I believe you may be correct

there are strong correlations between female reproductive age and autoimmunity

probably losing blood and uterine lining, and then rebuilding it all, constantly chews up nutrients that would have otherwise been used to help detox the liver

I would also argue that women exercise less which further contributes to "autoimmunity"

I am convinced that exercise plays a MASSIVE role in detoxification processes

exercise probably isn't talked about enough in these groups

Why are women most likely to end up with autoimmune disease?

I'd say higher levels og chronic stress (aka overloading on endotoxins) and chronic dieting (aka missing nutrients for detox) probably plays a huge roll.

Chronic stress from the preassure of having a career, a family, taking care of kids and household while also living up to demands from society, families and one self regarding looking good and being thin. Many women are chronically dieting, starving themselves and blaming thenselves for a lack of character when their bodies revolt from starvation ledning to cycles of bingeing and starving, leading to even more stress and weight gain. Women tend to eat "healthy" (and way too little) with tons of vegetables and follow all kinds of weird diets (nutrient imbalances). They are also more likely to take supplements as it's supposed to be good for you.

And so on...

Just my 2 cents

I think it’s something to do with female hormones and oestrogen.

Women seem to be more volatile and sensitive hormone-wise in my opinion. I think that results in them being more susceptible to environmental factors that can trigger autoimmunity like diet etc.

I have read many anecdotes of women having suppressed autoimmunity during pregnancy and then subsequently having increased autoimmunity post-pregnancy.

Some have theorised that this is due to the protective effects of progesterone- which is heavily elevated during pregnancy.

I think women are more sensitive overall and that is how it must be, because evolution goes forward through the womb....

A woman´s body have to sense the environment much better than a man´s because she must give signals to the baby that is evolving, so that it can adapt to the environment it is going to be born in, in the best possible way. Of course this evolution does not happen over one generation, but very slowly.

That is why women cant tolerate many things/stressors as well as men can, imho.

Look at a women who smokes and drinks and uses drugs, and how much faster she gets destroyed.
