Quote from lil chick on February 25, 2026, 6:36 amHere is my guess: they are all retinoids and come down the same detox pathways which may be overloaded and blocked? Certain people have written here about their specific issues with lutein (especially regarding the eyes).

Quote from lil chick on February 25, 2026, 2:57 pmA little bit of raw tomato is so much less reactive to me than a thick sauce that has been cooked down.
It also helps to think about what you serve with it. I've noted that pizza bothers me more than almost any food because of course it's loaded up with cheese too! And when you cook Italian you might think, hey, a glass of wine! But all of these things add up. Personally, for me cheese comes before tomatoes and wine :). My husband probably is more like you and would drop cheese or wine to have tomato.
My son cooks for us and sometimes I'm just scraping off the sauce because I don't want to complain. LOL
I'm not perfect! At all! :). Though some here are...

Quote from Joe2 on February 25, 2026, 10:15 pmI eat maybe a tomato a year. Used to eat a half gallon of cherry tomatoes from our volunteer vines daily for lunch. Nah. I ate all the tomatoes I need. I do eat swiss cheese from Switzerland and Norway now though. Loving it. Looking forward to trying some organic non-fortified bread like Grant wrote about some day too.

Indeed, among all retinoids I react faster to lutein containing foods with dry eye symptoms. Even after many years on low vA diet.
