Zinc/Vitamin C

Page 1 of 2Next

I was curious if anyone had a recommendation on a type of zinc--I've tried zinc gylcinate(didn't like the pumpkin seed oil in this one), zinc methionine, and picolinate-- I usually do 30 mg every other day. What doses do you guys do? Also, what dose for Vitamin C? I did some really high doses in the past and had trouble sleeping. Curious to see what other people recommend.

I don't think the zinc type matters too much, but I saw a study once that showed that picolinic acid increases urinary zinc excretion, so I avoid zinc picolinate.

I'd just take whatever amount of vitamin c that doesn't keep you up at night. 1-3 grams maybe. Depends what you consider a massive dose.

Also taking zinc alone will chelate copper that's why when I take it I use mix of zinc and copper from Jarrow Formulas: Zinc Balance.

I use beef.

Well, I've had blood work done after 6 months of taking it, and my copper was normal and zinc slightly low-normal range...also looked at ceruloplasmin, which is important in the case of free copper. So, I'm getting enough copper from my diet...I eat legumes and almonds every day, and they're high in copper. I wouldn't recommend taking copper without knowing your levels. Also, I'm curious if you have a link to that picolinate study, Harry? I use another supplement with picolinate in it...I've just stuck with the zinc glycinate seems to work the best for me. Thanks for the feedback. Also, I don't really eat a lot of red meat, but I hear you.

Here's one - https://academic.oup.com/jn/article-abstract/115/8/986/4756013?redirectedFrom=PDF "The urinary excretion of total zinc was increased by the ingestion of picolinic acid in all three experiments."

Probably not a big deal, but since there are plenty of other versions of Zinc supplement, maybe it's best just to go for one of them?

Cool thanks! Yeah, I have stopped taking the chromium picolinate supplement I was taking and noticed a difference...don't wanna lose zinc that's for sure! 🙂

According to my copper, ceruplasmin and zinc blood labs I have fairly low zinc and high copper (kind of common?) and my doc recommended this one: Protocol for Life Balance Zinc Glycinate

Shoot - I see that one has pumpkin oil in it too.  wonder if that amount is a problem.

I forgot to add that I now take 3 30mg zinc pills a day.  I worked up to it.   Once I detox the vitamin A I would think I don't need to take that much any more.  I am around 6 to 7 weeks into my detox.   I will probably get labs done in few months.  I had been taking 1 30 mg zinc pill for years and I was still really low with high copper.

I take 3 grams of C(sodium ascorbate)  a day because I've gotten lazy - I was taking more 4 to 6 grams of sodium ascorbate and didn't have gut problems.    I take a cheap brand - the NOW brand but I think it might be GMO.
