Viral infection leads to transient Hypervitaminosis A. Elevated levels of retinoic acid stimulate cellular release of collagen degrading enzymes. Accelerated collagen breakdown results in elevated ascorbate requirements.
So there's a direct physiological reason to supplement with vitamin C during a viral infection.
