B12, autoimmunity, stomach lining, broken guts

Page 1 of 5Next

Today I watched a video talking about the importance of B12 and how it isn't on MD's radar.

original link which stopped working.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvEizypoyO0

During some parts of this video, I started thinking about how B12 deficiency might be part of the VA issue.   It seemed to me that the people featured in the video weren't getting to the BOTTOM of their B12 deficiency.   They seemed to need endless amounts of high doses.

So, then I started thinking about how B12 needs the intrinsic factor.  The intrinsic factor comes from the stomach lining.

quote from a web search:  "In order for vitamin B12 to be absorbed by the body, it needs to be combined with a protein called intrinsic factor in the stomach. This protein is produced by cells in the stomach lining. In people with pernicious anemia, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks these cells, preventing intrinsic factor from combining with vitamin B12 and hampering its absorption.

Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune condition that most commonly affects people over 50 years old, and women seem to be more likely to develop it. Pernicious anemia is thought to run in families and seems to affect people who have other autoimmune conditions, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Addison’s disease, more often than those who do not" end quote

Well.... We have a working theory here about what ruins the LINING OF THINGS and what is often involved in auto-immunity.  ie, VA overload.

Many here arrive with broken guts.

B12 deficiency symptoms overlap quite a bit with high VA symptoms and I've heard lots of them mentioned here.  Yellow skin color, constipation, pins and needles, balance problems, mood problems, irritability, memory loss, fatigue, headache, breathlessness, tinitus...

Sorry if this is all something you guys have already thought about.

What I see here is maybe an infinite loop sort of condition that might slow things down quite a bit.

What's more, It appears that, like VA, it isn't always easy to determine if your B12 is at a healthy level for you.

Things that come to my mind are salt (to make HCL with), acids (perhaps like red wine or vinegar) or HCL to help digestion.  Perhaps also broths or aloe to help sooth and repair the gut?  And of course, meat and other sources of B12.   Pre-digested foods (like yogurt or sourdough)

I could see things going down this way initially:

The person takes too much VA

The stomach lining gets "eczema"

The person starts getting VA overload symptoms and B12 deficiency symptoms

The gut works worse and worse

The person intuits that the gut is working worse and worse

They start getting orthorexic, (and one of the symptoms of B12 deficiency is anorexia)

They try things like vegetariansim and become even more deficient in B12

They eat more "colorful vegetables"

yikes

Of course, as it says in the video, the whole B spectrum is needed!  And we are finding that B's are so very important in this VA overload detox.

Sounds very possible. I think there is a lot of vicious cycles going on as health deteriorates with vA toxicity & wise supplementation should help get out of some of these. We all know (unlike most nutritional therapists) that we need to get to route cause too. I’ve blown hot & cold with B supplementation & have no firm conclusions as to whether it’s useful or creates more problems due to exposing other deficiencies. I’ve tried taking b12 hydroxy form for sulphur sensitivity reactions (Greg Nigh).

You know what this video made me think?  That @ggenereux2014 needs a video like this!

Hi @lil-chick,

Thanks for posting that B12 video. It made me wonder about how many people are misdiagnosed with Parkinson's disease and MS when it's really due to B12 deficiency. Also, a number of vA toxicity studies have described the disintegrating effects it alone has on the myelin sheath of the nerves. So, the tragic combination could be not enough B12 and too much vA.

I’ll think about doing a video; thanks for the suggestion.

@lil-chick I enjoyed the video and think your thoughts about it make sense. Thank you! 🙂

Dr. Smith just posted an article with some evidence of B12 apparently being lowered by retinoic acid:

Great article, thanks so much @puddleduck

WAPF'ers often tell me that what THEY think is wrong is that SYNTHETIC va is harming us.  They don't think NATURAL va is harming us.  Dr Garrett seems to think there is no difference.

I wonder if we will ever get to the bottom of that one, although I think it could be hard, since we are inundated with VA supps in foods and also in animal FEEDS.

Oral supplements (Lozenges included) raise the serum level of B12, but they are mostly inactive metabolites. When you become deficient, only injections work (hydroxocobalamin better than cyanocobalamin).

Dr. Lonsdale states that folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies can occur later when you take megadoses thiamine.

Yes, many symptoms overlap vitamin A intoxication, so test blood b12 is highly recommended.

Since non vitamin A depletes vitamin B12, and deficiency symptoms are found a few months after zero vitamin A diet, I would add a b12 supplement in addition to zinc and taurine.
