Bean digestion

Page 1 of 2Next

Hi,
I have a question about black bean digestion.
I have been following the diet for 6 weeks now, I only eat white basmati rice, black beans, turkey breast, beef, salt, pepper, olive/sunflowers oil, rarely pineapple and applesauce. Will stay there for 3-4 months and then maybe expand the diet a bit.

To my question, I have noticed that in my bowel movement I can see the beans.

So I wonder, is that normal? Will it get better with time? Or is it possibly even very damaging for the gut to be exposed to persistent beans that he cannot digest permanent properly for months?

Thanks in advance!

@joel legumes are full of fiber. That's why you see what is left from the beans in the stool and what is left is fiber..  Same goes for all grains, legumes, nuts, seeds etc.. You don't see any meat in the stool for example because it is fully digested. It has no fiber..

To my question, I have noticed that in my bowel movements there are always a lot pieces of the black beans or the shells more precisely. So I can not digest them correctly, although I chew very extensively. I have no other gastrointestinal problems from the diet, so no abdominal pain or other.

So I wonder, is that normal? Will it get better with time? Or is it possibly even very damaging for the gut to be exposed to persistent beans that he cannot digest permanent properly for months?

I get that a lot when i eat beans or brown lentils , its undigested part of the food . Now any one type of bean or lentils are important during detox phase , @jiri suggested me pink lentils instead of brown , pink ones dont have a cover . Pink ones dont give me much of digestive issues . Also soak them over night in apple cider vinegar before using , and the wash them thoroughly it  removes toxins in the beans , otherwise it can mess up your colon .

@joel I don't know if you buy your beans already cooked or not. If you cook them yourself, there are some old but necessary rules for cooking legumes:

  • always soak them for  12 hours before cooking except for lentils that need much less depending on size and how fresh
  • never put any salt in the cooking water (otherwise they stay hard), salt comes on the cooked legumes
  • add a third of a teaspoon of baking soda in the water before cooking. Careful that you will get some foam when it starts boiling that you should remove when it appears.
  • Good luck!

@jiri But shouldn't everyone have that who follows this diet?

@r-2 Thanks for the tip, yes always let them soak over night and wash them very thoroughly, but I've never heard of soaking in apple cider vinegar, interesting! But is probably just a tip and not common ?! Should be helpful for digestion? But actually doesn't want to change the diet now, unless of course I harm my gut with this diet.

@ourania Always let them soak for at least 12 hours, have already tried 12-18 hours to see if I can digest them better. Only that with baking soda is new to me, is not a requirement, is it?  Because all other things are read very often and are known. I wonder if my problem is because of the missing baking soda, but everyone should not be able to digest the beans who do it without baking soda?!

@joel I don't know about other people, but in my family from both grandmothers we always put some baking soda, otherwise the beans stay hard. Maybe people who have no complaints buy them already cooked? Beans in tins are cooked at very high pressure, maybe with baking soda too, who knows?

If the beans are slightly hard, obviously they will be more difficult to digest.

If you try it tell me the result!

@joel I don't understand what is your concern? That you see undigested peaces of beans in your stool? What you see is probably outer layer of the bean. That is insoluble fiber. Same thing with all plant seeds, nuts etc. that have outer layer like corn, brown rice, buckwheat etc. etc.. The inside is mostly soluble fiber. So it is mixed to the stool(you don't see it) but it adds bulk to the stool... So again it is normal to see what is left from plants in the stool.. What is more important is color and shape of the stool and if it sink to the bottom or no. All this can tell you if you have issues digesting fats, if your liver/gallbladder/pancreas works etc.. Healthy stool from healthy person should look like smooth brown sausage that goes out easy(without red face and pushing like during birth of a child) and it should sink to the bottom so there isn't undigested fat in it.. I didn't have stool like this for like 18 years...

I don't eat beans anymore but when I did I found it very helpful to soak them in for like 12-18 hours in water and some vinegar, and then discarding that liquid, boiling them in fresh water for 2-3 hours. Boil them until they are soft and creamy, the longer the better really.

@ourania how long do you cook the beans? Interestingly, I also asked my grandma 😀 I also eat canned beans. So mixed.

All right, I will.

@jiri Okay then I'm less worried about that. My bowel movements became very, very hard and it is a very strong painful pressing. And only every second day. There was a little blood in it for the first time today. Not good. I drink 3.5 -4.5 liters a day, it won't be because of that, even if rice and beans draw a lot of water. Read that a low fiber diet can also lead to this. Definitely have to change something. Before the diet, I had no bowel problems.

Okay, I only get 1/5 of the daily fibre with this diet. Now I'm wondering where Grant gets his fiber from :O

Daily requirement 50g, I get only 9g
