Chestnuts

I remember when I was on the forum "Plant Poisons and Rotten Stuff" (which, if you think about it, is an ancestor to this one!)  (I think she removed it from the web, unfortunately)    Chestnuts were discussed there as a low-toxin sort of food.

Chestnut eating is a fun holiday pastime, scoring them and warming them by the fire.

Chestnuts were much a much more important food in the past.    You can even make them into flour.

From google:    "Yes, chestnuts contain a small amount of vitamin A, specifically in the form of beta-carotene. While they are an excellent source of other vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, B vitamins, copper, and manganese, their vitamin A content is relatively low."
