Quote from Jiří on June 21, 2020, 9:37 amFerritin should be ideally under 50. Each 500ml blood donation/bleeding drops ferritin by 30-50 I think.. Donating blood is really good prevention for good health.. If people can't donate blood and doctor doesn't want prescribe therapeutic bloodletting. I would do it at home if I had high ferritin like 300+ which I had. So I did it 3 times. 500ml each.. You just need some infusion kit and big needles..
@r-2 interesting. I never heard about selenium toxicity from someone.. I wouldn't take iron supplement. It can damage your body badly.. Iron is much more damaging than selenium.. What makes you think that you have selenium toxicity? What about B6 toxicity for example. This vitamin is also very high in meat.. I wouldn't try to detox selenium. Selenium is very important for detox, thyroid function etc..

Thank you for the reply @jiri
I just got my Iron profile results , My feratin is only 36 is that something to worry about ?? . My Hb is normal ( around 15.3 , range 13-17)
Why I believe its selenium toxicity .
Initially I believed it to be to be a form of deficiency , on a meat , rice and eggs diet . So the deficiencies ruled out were , folate( no folate on meat diet ) , thaimine ( white rice) , magnesium and calcium and copper ( due to high zinc) , but It wasn't the case .
So I as mentioned earlier , there was this fortified cereal that was making me feel better immediately . It was fortified with folate , iron , calcium ,thaimine and b2 . I ruled out folate, calcium , thaimine and b2. And Iron deficiency wasnt possible as I was eating enough red meat and verified with the blood test as well .
The thing that makes it worse are most selenium consisting foods , like eggs , meat and chicken.
I tried eating 5 egg white and it made me feel worse .
and Why that cereal was helping me was because of added iron as ferrous sulfate and it was actually reducing selenium .

But In contrary, I ate few brazil nuts and it made me feel terrible , guess what they are high in ? Selenium

Quote from Jiří on July 4, 2020, 7:42 am@r-2 I was not thinking about copper deficiency, but "disregulation" like I have. High free copper, low ceruloplasmin. Btw I don't think you still understand how it works. 🙂 It is not like you take some mineral especially micro mineral like zinc, copper etc.. Feel bad so you are toxic or feel better so you are deficient. In fact people toxic in copper often crave copper. Simply it is much more complex than you think. 🙂 Knowing your ceruloplasmin and copper will tell you how you adrenals work..

Quote from r on July 4, 2020, 8:02 amyes I don't understand it , I not well educated in nutrition as you guys are here , whatever I have learned is from reading posts here . I will do the ceruloplasmin and copper tests as you suggested . Rest assured you think my iron profile is good ?

Quote from Jiří on July 4, 2020, 9:46 am@r-2 yes I think low ferritin with ok Hb is much better than high ferritin.. Anyway I wouldn't mess with micro minerals like copper, zinc, iron, selenium. You can do real damage trying to "fix" something by taking some of them etc.. The best approach is to make sure you have RDA for all those minerals. So the body can balance itself..

Quote from Rachel on July 5, 2020, 3:07 am@r-2 I agree with jiri, your iron is fine.
Your haemoglobin is good. Ferritin of 32 is plenty of stored iron. Don't forget the reference range they use on tests is often far too broad. When you go to give blood, they do a finger prick test. They are testing your haemoglobin. They don't bother with ferritin. So long as your hb is good they would take the blood. That should give you some reassurance.
The iron they use to fortify cereals is poorly absorbed. I can't see that it is this that is making you feel good on the cereal. There is a video on youtube showing someone pulling the iron out of blended cereal and water with a magnet!
Have you tried putting an average day's food into a nutrition database like cronometer? That would give you an idea of what minerals and vitamins you're getting via your diet.

Can I still donate blood on 36 ferritin , @jiri said each donation takes away 50 units of ferritin , wouldn't that be dangerous for me if I donate blood?
Also , I have observed a strange phenomenon If I consume Iron , either in animals foods ( meat ) or ferrous Sulfate , I get dry mouth sores and dry nose / dry eyes , If I iron levels are supposedly normal or at lower end , do. you have any idea why its happening ?
I only did the TIBC and ferritin test , was I supposed to Serum Iron and Transferrin test as well ? or TIBC and ferritin is enough ?
