Dont eat lentils !!! Lutein / zeaxanthin is worse !

Page 1 of 2Next

Hi Guys

I wanted to share this update with you guys , after a long time on a diet full of meat , rice and eggs . Recently before 3 months ago I started including lentils and potatoes. Obviously for minerals and B vitamins like b1 and folate . At that time I had recovered enough from Vitamin A toxicity , my digestion was superb , stools were normal . Energy was high , eyesight was sniper vision and most importantly tinnitus was totally gone!  This has happened years after the start of vitamin A overdose for me . So definitely this was a sign of great progress .

Initially  I felt ok , but after a while I started getting symptoms back again , I thought maybe its dumping phaze ,  ultil @salt mentioned that lentils have ton of Lutein. At this point I. think I have gone way back in my recovery .  Tinnitus is back , anxiety and nervousness , vision is blurry , muscle pain . Grant mentioned same about Lutein . Since past 3 days I gave up on lentils and started eating black beans instead . I feel way better , symptoms are disappearing . Now I dont seems to react much on retinol or beta-carotene as much as I do on  Lutein / zeaxanthin.

So , be cautious .  Consuming Lutein / zeaxanthin is a big roadblock for recovery .

@salt could you please mention about which beans are probably safer to consume . I am skeptical about red kidney beans . Black beans ( which was actually back lentils ) , there are also white kidney beans . But I have no idea how much Lutein is in it .

Also be carefult about the amount of buckwheat you consume , it does have a Lutein.

I seem to be doing fine if I eat potatoes / bananas . Even if I drink a glass of milk , it does nothing to me , But lentils ( brown , pink , red ) is a NO NO.

I'm happy to hear that you feel better.

I would stick to black beans (turtle beans) and white beans (white lima, cannelini) only. The other ones have way more carotenoids.

Regarding buckwheat, from what I have read it seems like nearly all whole grain foods have a lot of carotenoids, except for brown rice, and maybe white corn. So I would suggest avoiding whole grain foods in general. It's easy to get deficient in the B-vitamins if you eat a lot of refined grain. Potato is a very good food, it's very nutritious, more nutritious than any whole grain food, and it has nearly no carotenoids especially not the white potatoes (although even the yellow potatoes are relatively low in carotenoids). So if you tolerate potatoes well I think it's a very good staple food. Some people are allergic to the solanine in potatoes.

I think Smith's food recommendations are very sloppy and you shouldn't blindly follow them, however his research is pretty useful.

"It is now estimated that improving the vitamin A status of all deficient children worldwide would prevent 1-3 million childhood deaths annually.’ 59 The World Health Organization has made an error, nearly four decades ago, when they included recommendations in the food guide which were based on evidence that some people could produce vitamin A from beta-carotene precursor foods. 46 Science has been trying to prove this for nearly four decades and the jury is still undecided. 1, 6, 8, 12, 16, 28, 29 The expert witnesses don’t agree and science is often misused to sway the public interest. 44 Having made such a heinous error, the World Health Organization, has not yet come forth to acknowledge the mistake."

That study is jam packed with so much that I don't know where to begin.   So many thoughts in one paper.

It does seem like my astigmatism came along at the same time my VA symptoms got very serious.

Hi, did ever do a cholesterol test? Lutein is transported in HDL so it would be interesting what your number was.

@sam I did last time , it was 64 Mgdl , in Feb . I often Do cholesterol test , and. My HDL has always. been in the range.

Mine is 46 and I am very sensitive to lutein too.

If you are very sensitive to lutein you will have to avoid oats too, especially in large amounts.
