Fats

I thought a subject on fats could help people make a better choice on an important part of a healing diet.

I have noticed improvements in my toddler whenever he eats pie made by his great grand mother. The pie is made with the demonized Crisco (which contains hydrogenated soybean oil and palm oil).

From a book I read about a lutein free diet, soybean oil is good because it provides lecithin, vitamin E and vitamin K. Lecithin is notably important for acetylcholine metabolism and palm oil provides MCTs which are a great source of energy.

Many things that are positive in the short term can become problematic in the long term (ie VA). Perhaps that is what you are seeing with the Crisco?

I thought red palm oil was a big no no! Soy lecithin I was wondering about. I have liposoheric vit c made with soy lecithin, and I'm just not sure about taking it. It's s yellow/orange color which gives me psuse. I thought soy has VA in, but not sure. Fats for me are olive oil in rice, coconut milk (non fortified) and I saute onions in a little butter. Fat from ground beef too. Also I use MCT oil powder in my coffee. Not sure if I'm doing it right thiugh. Just starting out.

I mainly use a very light olive oil.  I tried coconut oil during the first week on low Vitamin A, but found  it difficult to digest.

Also, I tolerate a small pat of butter on baked potatoes.

I think there was already a thread about fats started by Harry...also unrelated to the topic I like your name somuch4food. To reiterate what I said in the other thread...didn't do diet for long but butter and beef tallow worked for me, don't do well with unsaturated fat like olive oil.

For what it's worth, I have read in a book that coconut oil is often not well tolerated by very fair people. I personnally haven't tried coconut oil, probably because it seems so trendy (I'm often put off by fads)

Oops, you're right. I missed it while browsing yesterday. I remember checking if there was already a thread.

In the ray peat, anti PUFA community hydrogenated, tasteless coconut oil is often used and recommended as it seems to cause less digestive upset and less of an immune response. Many people who cannot tolerate coconut oil can tolerate hydrogenated/refined coconut oil.

I think PUFA plays a role in all of this aswell.

I don't understand why Garret recommends butter. The whole reason butter is yellow (instead of white like milk) is because the beta-carotene. Same goes for tallow, the more yellow it is the more carotene is in it.
