Personal UPDATE: Blood Donation
Last Wednesday, I donated blood for the first time in 25 years. I share my blood work and have normal iron but very high ferritin (700s). See pinned Tweet, I have no clue how long it's been that high because I only first tested it at age 41.
That night, I noticed that I felt "lighter on my feet". But I was tired and I'm no stranger to placebo effects.
I gave it a couple more days, but it was my next swim where I could REALLY tell something had happened -- my joints felt like I was a teenager in the water again. Like ZERO restriction! This was alien to me, I forgot shoulders could even feel like this!
I see a chiropractor for ART (active release technique) twice a month, and he confirmed - range of motion increased.
The feeling continued into the week mark, with yesterday's swim. It's clear - Removing vitamins A and D leveled my joints up a few steps, and this did a few more. Very exciting.
I now need to get my oxygen back (it feels like they stole half a lung), hopefully quickly enough because I have an open water race in 4 weeks. But even if I suffer there, this was worth it and I'll be donating again in 8 weeks and testing ferritin again a bit after that.
Now for the weird part. The "bile dump".
Before and the blood donation, I was pretty beat (had a swim meet with 6 sprint events, swam slightly faster than last year with less training!)... and for the first time in about 8 months, I went through a "purge" with yellow snot.
But even crazier was the SMELL.
After the donation, I did a slow cardio session, lots of sweating. My wife and daughter we APPALED by my odor. So. Bad. They wanted to incinerate my shirt, and may actually have done so.
We can only guess what happened, but those who follow the Toxic Bile Paradigm can probably guess -- my liver felt "freed up" to release some unruly trash. But with no lab tests on my sweat, who knows.
Regardless, I'm feeling great, moving on some big things, and I feel unlocked. Unjammed, de-gummed if you will.
Ultimately, my conclusion and advise is this:
1. Men, get your iron and ferritin tested at least once a few years. Even in your 20s. You might have some very inflammatory stuff floating around. I'll never know when this started.
2. Consider blood donation anyway. See how it feels.
3. Practitioners - find some metrics to make this a blood test worth exploring. Not only steroid bros need to test this. I'm life long natty.

Quote from lil chick on August 28, 2024, 5:57 amThere have been some interesting discussions about iron, here is one. I haven't re-read this entire thread but I wonder if I wrote in there somewhere that it seems to me that a loved one of mine is both VA overloaded AND iron overloaded--this person has congenitally weak kidney function. For some of us, particularly those whose diets weren't especially high in VA or iron, I wonder if weak kidney function plays in.

1. Muscle meat beef, some chicken, some turkey 2. Oats 3. Insanely cleaned white rice* 4. Apples 5. Beans (black or pinto) 6. Sourdough Bread, Pretzels 7. Bananas 8. White grapes (less in the winter) 9. Occasional berries 10. Ginger and salt are my main spices 11. Not afraid of post workout sugar or intra-workout dextrose. Dextrose rules. 12. Occasional white potatoes cooked in beef tallow / olive oil blend. Expect skin flare-ups if overdoing taters 13. Coconut aminos 14. Maple syrup 15. Honey sparingly (it's too good where I live) 16. Black coffee, half cup in the AM. I still also use limited-ingredient pre-workouts (this is my industry) 17. Peanut butter on occasion All organic and Reverse osmosis water. Mineral supplements: - Selenium 200mcg - molybdenum 125mcg - zinc picolinate 40mg - magnesium glycinate, ~300mg/day worth - topical magnesium chloride lotion on whatever's most sore - Coconut water powder with salt during workouts - 4g Psyllium + 4g SunFiber + 500-750mg activated charcoal before bed - Niacin ~150mg per day total I stay pretty low on added fat. As you can see, over time the vitamin A disrespect diet has actually turned me closer to low-fat, I used to be low-carb. It's working quite well. Basically all of my fat comes from beef and a touch of olive oil and peanut butter. Occasional butter and egg through baked goods may pop through, no big deal, but I don't go out of my way to eat them. I'll have tomato very sparingly if needed to be polite. * For rice I rinse many times in RO water til the water stays more clear, then soak in charcoal for at least 20 minutes, then rinse more

Quote from Janelle525 on August 28, 2024, 7:11 amI think men in general will have more iron because they don't have many ways as women to get rid of stored iron. Eating beef three times a day will probably lead to iron problems in the end for men. There is also a risk for genetically storing more iron. I don't know all the ways vitamin A interacts with iron. We'd need to see more blood work from Grant to find out. I hope he does it because he is an excellent case study. He should do an iron panel, also get imaging done of his carotid arteries to see how stable his plaques are (everyone has plaques, a zero calcium score just means more plaques that are unstable).
