Hypothyroidism

What has been your experience with hypothyroidism on this diet? What are your thoughts on supplementing thyroid?

I think I am hypothyroid. I think I have had subclinical/undiagnosed hypothyroidism for most of my life. I have never had any blood tests done, but I think I have physical signs. My extreme sleep schedule (sleeping around 5 am getting up around 1 pm) and some hypertrophied muscles that I think are mild Hoffman's syndrome 0r hypothyroid myopathy. Fried looking hair. My tongue also has indentations on the side. Should I start supplementing thyroid? A reservation I have about supplementing is that I read that you will have to take the medication for the rest of your life. I'd be grateful to know of any experiences.

@leap7 why would you take thyroid hormones if you don't have direct damage to the thyroid gland? Obviously you are hypothyroid for some reason and by taking thyroid you will not fix that cause. You can be toxic and/or deficient in something and/or the body is in such a bad shape that due to high chronic stress and excessive oxidative damage is forcing the body lower thyroid on purpose. By taking thyroid hormones and bypassing all regulative mechanisms in the body you can damage your body even more. Analyze your life style, environment, diet. What is the source of the stress. Hair tissue mineral analysis is also really good to find out what is going on so you can fix it.. If you will not change anything and just start taking thyroid it will not end up well in long term.. I think that we can figure out what is going on if you write your history and how/where you live, what you eat. For some reason people have a problem write their story(it does't take to long)  and expect some good advice. Nobody can give good advice if he doesn't know anything about that person.. The more info we know the better.. That is holistic approach and that is the only approach that works. But if you want just put a band-aid on things then regular medical system is great for that..

There is a book out called hypothyroidism type 2 (or something similar) by Mark Starr.  I read it a long time ago.  It likens the common issue many have that they appear hypothyroid yet they aren't making oddly low amounts of thyroid.  It is sort of like diabetes type 2 in that way.  It appears that the cells aren't listening to these hormones.

Now, the book suggests you take thyroid hormone to get rid of the symptoms, and you know I think things get better for a time, but really what people need to figure out is why the cells aren't listening to hormones like thyroid and insulin properly.

IMO, VA is probably one of those reasons.

I'm pretty sure that some people here have said they are feeling better thyroid-wise here.  You might have to use the search engine to find some of the thoughts on it.

PUFAs and beans cause hypothyroidism. I don't eat any kind of beans, they always lower the temperature in my extremities. It's important to eat at least 80 grams of protein per day (you might need up to 100-120g), and enough carbs to make you satisfied. I think sufficient calcium is needed too, as far as I know the only source of calcium that doesn't have VA is eggshells.

@salt I'm curious, if you don't eat beans, what do you eat on this diet? Just starches and meat? Do you eat any vegetables?

Currently I'm doing a short zero carb experiment but without going too much into detail typically I would eat:

  • instant potato mash (no dairy) (I get allergic symptoms from regular potatoes but if you tolerate them I think they're a great food)
  • cassava
  • sundried dark raisins
  • parsnips
  • celeriac
  • cod and other low-fat whitefish like haddock, saithe, plaice. I try to discard as much fat as possible
  • coconut oil

Occasionally I'd have some cauliflower and other white brassica family vegetables, but these are also bad for the thyroid so I have them maybe once every 2 weeks or so, and only if I crave it. I have red meat at about the same frequency, I don't feel well when I eat a lot of iron. Sometimes I have some turkey breast. Raisins or white sugar if I want something sweet.

@salt What a coincidence! Last week I doubled my bean consumption and started feeling really bad after a few days.
Cold, anxiety, depression. Since I am familiar with ray peat I googled ray peat bean article and found the same article as you posted. I think beans should be approached carefully. Ray Peat is probably right that they are estrogenic and cause hypothyroidism. I think of beans as medicine instead of a staple food now. I think starches and meat are foundation of the diet. Beans might be added to the base of starch and meat if you want to detox faster. Beans help to pull vitamin A from the liver but some is going to go into your system causing flare-ups or hypothyroid symptoms.
In Grants e-books were he outlines his diet at the end he said he only eats 100 grams of cooked beans a day. That is not a lot.

Beans are mix of pectin, antinutrients, problematic proteins etc.. That is very bad combination for most people.. Btw for me fiber from kiwi fruit and white mushrooms is great. Zero bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhea.. I eat 1-2 kiwi, 100g of semi hulled parboiled brown rice and 100-250g of white mushrooms a day + some banana sometimes. Everything else is meat and white rice.. My pooping is great..

Beans weekly seems traditional and also seems to be what I can get in the mood for.   I haven't had the urge to add them to every day as others have here, the thought isn't enticing at all to me.  (although perhaps my peanut butter urges are bean urges of a type, so that might mean I'm getting a bit more legumes)

Cold, anxiety, depression.
