lil chick's log

We have been on a low oxalate diet for the last three to four years. At the beginning we were suffering but as they left our bodies, we have been improving considerably. They certainly were part of the problem. Now we have zero oxalates problems (but cook in a way to make sure they do not come back).

So for us it must be something else.

I have decided to stop eating lentils because of the lutein content. We shall go on with urad dal instead. I have a few packets of lentils left. When they are finished I shall start this urad dal experiment. If the eyes concentrate lutein, it might be the culprit. Maybe we have reached some kind of lutein limit.

@lil-chick , your observations and thoughts are so interesting!  I apologize for not responding to various comments from before--a bit overwhelmed. I read all with great interest!  I'd had food attacks for years (along with other various symptoms) without realizing they were food attacks. Migraines and neck headaches and nausea/gastric issues that would last always for about 3 days in my teens through 50-s . I realized that alcohol would do that at any amount in my 20's and stopped that completely.  Now, after being on the most extreme elimination diet a la Grant for almost 1.5 years, I am happy to report I have not had this happen in about a year.  I'm so happy to see your face and skin looking so excellent!  Congratulations!  🙂

Re hangovers:  I have never had a hangover in my life.  Historically I have always had a low tolerance for alcohol and go very quickly from tipsy to room spinning and throwing up.  It seems that if I have a little too much for my body to handle (which is not a lot) my body purges it.  I used to be able to manage 1 - 2 glasses of wine (not massive glasses).
I haven't had any alcohol for several years now as at the point where I gave it up, even a sip made me feel ill.  A few years ago even a xmas mince pie with a little alcohol in it made me ill.  I just stay well clear of it now.

Yes, lutein is a worry in several of the foods we are currently eating here too.  Like oats.

Whats more, there are hundreds of other carotenes.

And then there are other pigments...  And other plant poisons...

Ack!

I have a new respect now for white foods (such as white flour, potatoes and rice) and meats, and realize why they are the backbone of almost every cuisine.

Sorry to hear you have what I call "food attacks", @sarah4

REALLY  so bad (shakes head)

Interesting @rachel, I have gotten pretty close to being as intolerant of alcohol as you are.  It's also amazing to me that even though I could never tolerate much, I can still feel the slight addiction to it!

I wonder about the slight little anti-VA boost alcohol gives at first, that @ourania has described.

Thank you @lil-chick !  Yes, I agree...almost nothing worse...

Diet has made them disappear for the last year--I'm actually in an unusual situation of not feeling that it is an issue anymore. 🙂 I hope they can disappear for everyone!!

YAY!!!!  I'm so glad to hear that, @sarah4

Instead of having a few attacks a month, over the last 15 months I've had two.

I would say it is the most interesting "progress" that I've had since starting Generouzing.

Although those 2 attacks brought me down quite a bit!  :')

Food attacks/poisonings have made me a home body, and homebodies run in my family because of them.  (reaching to the level of phobia).  However, I always point out that my fears are reasonable, and phobias are unreasonable fears.  🙂

Lots of interesting information from everyone. @ourania I’m very interested in your experiment with lutein as I’m now worried I’ve been having too much & eyes are a problem for me. Or is it oxalate dumping for me as I haven’t addressed this properly yet? So hard to know what is going on. I also think that people who go low vA may dump oxalates but this will depend on previous diet. I think about all these things a lot but haven’t come to any conclusions - my brain is not as sharp as it was & I suspect that this is a vA symptom! I think symptoms are very individual as they depend on previous diet & genetics. Great to hear about ‘food attacks’ disappearing. I’ve not suffered from these but they sound horrible.

@lil-chick and @ourania oh yeah, I stopped my thiamine for like a month due to a dental issues (I had to take pills for that, and I don’t do well juggling a complicated supplement schedule lol—my executive function ability isn’t there) and it was pretty much constant hangover, plus strong brain fog and overwhelm that was almost paralyzing. Basically spent the month metaphorically curled into a ball, or moving so slowly it felt like I was living and thinking underwater. Started back on my usual 3 grams of thiamin HCL a couple of days ago, and wow. It’s like night and day for my brain. I still have CFS/ME symptoms, but I don’t feel as exhausted or as stuck. Love that stuff. I was sleeping without it, but I sure sleep better on it!

That is so interesting @puddleduck, I'm glad you have found a really good supp to make your life easier.   I wonder if you will reach a time when you will level-off on the need of it?  Sometimes I think we could be related when I look at your picture, it reminds me of myself a bit, when younger.   It really makes me think about the genetics of all of this.

I have been trying out @tim-2  's ideas regarding fixing teeth/gum problems and I thought I would write about them here, (the idea came up on some other thread, but probably best not to overload it with my thoughts).

The extra cleaning (after each meal) seems to be working out.

I didn't have a very good intuitive feeling when trying out h202 as mouthwash. It could be that my h202 is just old and yucky, I am going to buy a new bottle just in case.   It did seem to be killing germs, which is the point.  But it made my mouth feel very dry and awkward.  But then again, all of my facial mucous membranes seem to suffer from dryness.  So not a surprise somehow.

So, after only a few tries with the H202, I tried salt water as the mouthwash, and at this my inner cheeks and tongue started coming up with tiny sore places here and there.  It even hurt to talk.    I think when I had the awkward dry mouth going, I actually bit these little places by mistake.  This makes me think there might have even been some swelling going on.  I actually think the salt had a similar effect and was a bit caustic.

Then, today, I tried a baking soda rinse.  Intuitively, it seemed the best of the 3 so far, giving my mouth a "sweeter" feel and a smooth feeling to teeth.

Perhaps, my saliva is acid due to detox, just as urine seems to be, and nasal and eye fluids too.

Because I am the cook here, it is very hard for me to carve out large amounts of time not eating.  That part I might not ever perfect.  Tasting is an important part of cooking.  🙂
