Lugol's solution, Iodine question

It's not though. For most of human history the majority would have been getting less than the RDA. RDAs tend to be liberal.
Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones, it doesn't have any other known use in the body.

Quote from Jiří on March 4, 2022, 7:39 am@tim-2 the biggest benefit is that it's anti estrogenic. It seems that without enough iodine you can not detox estrogen properly. So females develop all kinds of cysts. I have cysts on my thyroid. Had enlarged prostate as well from high estrogen during steroid use.. I think that is the cause of cancers of breast, prostate, ovaries etc.. Males as they age the estrogen to testoterone ratio is worse and worse they gain body fat which also increases estrogen synthesis and you think all this can fix couple of microgams that are in some foods? For people it's easier to just take 1 drop of lugol and you don't have to worry about if you have some trace amounts of iodine from food.. But that's great everyone can have their opinion.. I will tell everyone to take some iodine. You can tell everyone don't take it it's dangerous heh..

Since you two have been chatting, it got me to jump back on this iodine train once again. I've taken 1 drop of Lugol's 2% maybe about 5 times in the past 3 years since I starting dealing with constipation issues which I would say is a symptom of another health condition that I've been dealing with since the summer of 2017. The condition is a huge missing variable to our understanding of probably the majority of our health issues if not all. That is another topic, of which I would gladly subject myself to interrogation by anyone. Any how I wonder what both of your thoughts are about my latest experience with taking iodine. So I started taking a drop of iodine 2% Lugol's in my bottled water with food. It's been six days supplementing and I decided to stop today because I've went from improvement to getting worse. Here's what I experienced.
1. The first day I noticed better sleep, my running thoughts that usually keeps me from going into deep sleep seemed to diminish. (I believe I have leaky gut and systemic candinda/bacterial infection throughout my body.)
2. After few days I also noticed the two swollen lymph nodes just under each side of my jaw has shrunk quite a bit, maybe about 40% shrinkage. One is now like the size of a pea, and the other may a peanut. They've been really swollen for about four years now and the size fluctuates but this reduction in size this time seems more drastic than the usual fluctuations. Is iodine killing pathogens that could be relieving the burden of these two lymph nodes or something else?
3. I got really tired during the day and had to take an hour nap. I know it's the iodine because it happens in previous sessions as well. I usually only go on for like 4 days and then I stop cause I start to feel worse. This is the first time I went for 6 days supplementing. - Could it be die-off? or something else?
4. I started taking PHGG a few days during this session and it likely is the cause of a lot of passing gas, not sure if this is actually what is making me feel worse rather than the iodine.
5. Noticing Joint stiffness and soreness that are probably related to the fatigue I starting feeling after starting. Is iodine causing my muscles to get fatigued? I also noticed my hamstrings wanting to cramp as well
Note before this I was exercising consistently for about a month now and gaining a lot of muscle mass, strength and endurance(it's the most physical fit I've felt in my life while being in the worst health in my life ughh) so this recent crash seems un-mistakenly due to the iodine supplementation.

Quote from Jiří on March 13, 2022, 3:42 am@john in this world where people are toxic in all kinds of things and deficient in essential micronutrients especially minerals(toxins displace them) it doesn't work like "I start taking some zinc or iodine or selenium or molybdenum and I should feel better and if I fell worse it means I shouldn't take it..." When you start taking minerals that kick toxins out of the body you will experience herx reaction. Iodine is the king of herx reaction because it starts displacing all kinds of toxins from mercury to halogens but also it is strong anti microbial so you start experiencing herx reaction from endotoxin... To me it's not a question if we need extra iodine or not. We all need it for sure. Someone healthy who never had any toxicity, hormone issues etc.. will be ok maybe with 200-500mcg. Toxic people especially who have issues with dealing with excess of estrogens could need doses in miligram doses.. The key here is to start slow. I started as always with 15mg which was too much for me obviously. So herx reaction like crazy. Everything from headache to crazy racing mind and symptoms of mercury/copper toxicity.. Now I am back to 6mg and I think I still need to lower the dose maybe to 2-3mg a day.. Some people can take 100mg of iodine like it's nothing, but people like me who have issues with SIBO, mercury toxicity etc.. I could die If I take something like 50-100mg... For me now so far the biggest + is that my bowel movements are great. Zero constipation which I had as long as I can remember.. It shows that iodine is killing excess of bacteria in the small intestine, because I can eat even legumes and have no bloating, almost no gas.. I would liek to go slowly up to 10-15mg and stay there for some time and once my body is saturated I think good dose to take daily forever is around 1-3mg a day.. Which is good dose, but far from any kind of high/toxic doses.. People in Japan eat easily 10mg a day.. So taking 1-5mg a day is far from "unnatural" dose...

I've been reading that various sea vegetables are a good source of iodine. Why not consume them for iodine requirements? Of course you might have to avoid seaweed that is extremely high in iodine such as kelp (kombu).

Quote from Jiří on March 13, 2022, 10:27 am@fred 1. oceans are polluted so there can be good amount of toxins like heavy metals in sea vegetables 2. sea vegetables are crazy expensive 3. if it's not fresh it's hard to tell how much iodine is in it. You need to understand that iodine evaporates.. So there is no reason why not take lugols solution. It's cheap. It has both iodide and iodine which you want and you know exactly how much you take..

I like some sea vegetables in small amounts but yes I would avoid kelp which in my opinion tastes bad anyway. I would avoid eating any significant amount of sea vegetables. It's best to eat a balanced diet that contains a range of iodine containing foods i.e. fish and eggs and optionally small amounts of milk and sea vegetables.

The Wolff–Chaikoff effect is known as an autoregulatory phenomenon that inhibits organification in the thyroid gland, the formation of thyroid hormones inside the thyroid follicle, and the release of thyroid hormones into the bloodstream.[6] This becomes evident secondary to elevated levels of circulating iodide. The Wolff–Chaikoff effect is an effective means of rejecting a large quantity of imbibed iodide, and therefore preventing the thyroid from synthesizing large quantities of thyroid hormone.[7] Excess iodide transiently inhibits thyroid iodide organification. In individuals with a normal thyroid, the gland eventually escapes from this inhibitory effect and iodide organification resumes; however, in patients with underlying autoimmune thyroid disease, the suppressive action of high iodide may persist.[8] The Wolff–Chaikoff effect lasts several days (around 10 days), after which it is followed by an "escape phenomenon,"[9] which is described by resumption of normal organification of iodine and normal thyroid peroxidase function. "Escape phenomenon" is believed to occur because of decreased inorganic iodine concentration inside the thyroid follicle below a critical threshold secondary to down-regulation of sodium-iodide symporter (NIS) on the basolateral membrane of the thyroid follicular cell.
The Wolff–Chaikoff effect has been used as a treatment principle against hyperthyroidism (especially thyroid storm) by infusion of a large amount of iodine to suppress the thyroid gland. Iodide was used to treat hyperthyroidism before antithyroid drugs such as propylthiouracil and methimazole were developed. Hyperthyroid subjects given iodide may experience a decrease in basal metabolic rate that is comparable to that seen after thyroidectomy.[6] The Wolff–Chaikoff effect also explains the hypothyroidism produced in some patients by several iodine-containing drugs, including amiodarone. The Wolff–Chaikoff effect is also part of the mechanism for the use of potassium iodide in nuclear emergencies.[10][11][12]

Thanks, that must be why Dr. Brownstein says TSH rises initially and then returns to normal when supplementing. But I didn't know all these other terrible symptoms that came with it. I had a deep nightmare and at the end I heard someone calling my name a few times and I could not tell if it was a dream or real until I fully woke up - it was in my head, it's probably equivalent to hearing voices. In light of this info, I may continue supplementing past this 10 day phase until I reach the "escape phenomenon" and resumes normal function.
The reason why is, as I mentioned, my two lymph nodes have shrunk considerable and that has to be a good thing I assume. I wonder if I continue supplementing if they would continue to shrink back to size where I can no longer feel it.I know you're a proponent of supplementation but what do you think of a drop of 2% Lugol's a day? Considering That's about 2.5mg. Perhaps I should cut the dosage in half and take it slower.

I'm not a proponent of supplementation in general and if you read this thread you'll see I don't recommend iodide supplementation.
