Neil's Log

I'm not going to go into too much detail. I just want to make a note I've been on a low vitamin A diet for a few weeks now. After about 3 or 4 days on this diet I got the weirdest feelings in my muscles like they were filled with liquid. It felt like my blood was really thick.  It's far too intense to be my imagination, but it doesn't hurt.

I'm hoping I'm going through detox symptoms but I think that might be wishful thinking. My eyes are yellow all the time, and my spleen aches.  I have an overwhelming sense of dread. I also have about a million physical symptoms that I had before starting the diet.  A new one is that is I have slightly stinging eyes, but I think it must be impossible to have vitamin A deficiency this quickly, especially after the insane amount of milk I used to drink.  My skin was super dry before starting so I'm not too concerned about that.

I come to this forum and see people say how I should avoid just about every food under the sun and it makes me feel like suicide might be my only option. This low vitamin A diet is my only hope.  Hopefully I will report back with some progress.

Hello Neil,

Yeah, its probably not VA deficiency already 🙂 , it is most likely VA being flushed out from the liver into the circulation. Have you also felt an increase in irritability, frustration, anger, hopelessness etc during this period? For me this is what I call estrogenic symptoms (don't know if it´s actually estrogen) and I often get that if I attempt to raise my hormones or take a stimulant of some sort (recently tried taurine). I actually never had those symptoms at the start of the diet (despite my previously insane intake of VA), and usually never have unless I try hard to escape  this hibernating state I'm in. I'm so severely hypothyroid that the VA in the liver probably mostly just sits there dormant. The reason I write this is because, I think the reaction you are having is a really good sign that your body is able to mobilize the VA and are actively trying to get rid of the excess. Meaning your thyroid/hormones are "good". Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm kind of demented :/

And dont worry about the food, just eat food that you tolerate well and feel good with, and don't be afraid to eat "varied", just avoid the worst high VA foods obviously. You don't have to eat a super restricted diet if you don't want to. I consider my self very strict, but it isn't a hassle for me, and I don't crave any VA really, except some pasta once in a blue moon. And it also isn't the end of the world if you get some VA in you, as long as overall intake is low 🙂 And also, if you have seen me talking about avoiding any foods, take it with a grain of salt. I have changed my mind a million times and still often change up the things I do. It´s just a snapshot in time of what that person thinks. What ultimately matters is your own experience and opinion.

Did you ever take Accutane?

Hope it works out for you.

@neil  "I'm not going to go into too much detail." that's a shame because when we don't know anything about your history we can't tell what could be your problem. How hard it is write what was your diet, life style, when health issues started. If it's due to diet, some drugs, meds, stress whatever. Once we have brief description of your life. We can conclude something from it.. Otherwise nobody can't help you much..

Thank you. I really appreciate the warm message. It made me feel better.  To answer your questions, I've never taken Accutane, and I do indeed have a strong feeling of hopelessness, which I am hoping is the detox.

I understand that. But to be honest, no one here can help me anyway. No here knows anything more than me. Everyone is stumbling in the dark desperately trying to figure out what is wrong with them.   And I don't want to have someone who knows  no more than me telling me how I have to avoid high copper foods, high oxalates, high this, high that until I'm scared to eat anything. I just want to create a thread, and if I show improvements I'll come back and add information and specifics about my diet in case anyone else finds it useful.

@neil Hopefully this path will help you, but big reminder, this is not 3 or 4 days to health, if you were devouring fortified dairy for years or decades and eating the rainbow of color foods, your journey on low VA will be years to see major improvements.  There will be short gains and setbacks along the way, but most of us still experience continued progress the longer we go.

I recently just hit 2yrs on low VA, healing continues.

Rices, beans, mushrooms, lean meat are the staples.

Hi @neil

I thought about your posts all night and have a few things to say.

First of all when you realize that lots of the good things you want to do are illegal, and most of the advice given freely in our society is wrong, you have now become wiser than about 99% of the population.  My idea is always to look to tradition because that knowledge was hard-won.

Second, I think it is very smart to distract yourself and play the long game here.  Many have said that getting moving is key to disrupting detox.  Clearing out the home seems to be a common activity for many of us, almost like a metaphor for the body.

This experimental Vitamin A overhaul is difficult.   It's hard work.   Please take care to be nice to yourself.

Hello @neil, welcome here. You wonder if you are going through detox symptoms. I think you definitely are. I have gone through the same, and they come back again and again, most of the time in a slightly weaker form. I + husband have been on this for nearly a year.

The positive point from what you describe is that you ARE detoxing. Which means that you have lowered your vA/carotenoids intake sufficiently for your body to be able to release what is stored.

Overwhelming sense of dread, suicidal thoughts, stinging eyes and more. We have this nearly every other day. BUT I am a mean combative old lady from a long line of warriors. No way I am going to please my remaining enemies by going away! This is a fight and I have turned my body into a weapon to help humanity. I prefer to die fighting. This wanting my death to be useful is what makes sure I am not voluntarily kicking the bucket.

@lil-chick is right about the pursuit of pleasure. My pleasure is to find the truth and help it prevail.

She is right too about distracting yourself during the passing of the time necessary to get more comfortable. Watching optimistic films of the 180's, or whatever you like.

Without too much exercise. I was an athlete and always controlled my body. I was devastated when this body seemed to stop responding, aimed at a terrible end. I fought and fought on the slippery slope.

Until I realized that this vA less diet started to give me more muscular strength without any exercise, and more joint suppleness and muscular elasticity without doing anything more than following the exclusion of vA products and carotenoids. Just resting on my sofa, watching films, reading books, meditating.

The unbearable side of this for me is the feelings of dread, suicide as a pleasant option, deteriorating eyesight. Sadness for all of this, seemingly pointless pain.

I don't know how old you are, but you may be much younger than me (I am 68) and things will move much faster with you if this is the case.

Good luck Neil! I wish you all the best on this journey. Many thanks for describing your experience. As you well know, we are forging our way ahead on a new path and what you write will help many, even if they do not post.

Hugs!

Thank you for the welcome @ourania. After reading this...

"The unbearable side of this for me is the feelings of dread, suicide as a pleasant option, deteriorating eyesight. Sadness for all of this, seemingly pointless pain."

Are you sure you are actually improving? Are you sure you aren't just messing up your eyes through lack of vitamin A?  This is what I'm worried about. It's really easy through wishful thinking to think something is detox when it's actually just the same problem getting worse.  I'm 40 and everything seems to accumulate in my body. I was hoping vitamin A was the root cause but I think it might be just another thing. I honestly thought I was improving after having my mercury fillings removed.  But recently had a massive setback.  I'm thinking could it be the cauliflower rice? Has my body become so useless it can't even get rid of that?

If the detox phase is as bad as this for a year I'll never make it.  I can't survive on only 2 hours sleep a night. I have so many horrible side effects that I believe are from low serotonin (which I can't raise until I figure out what as been accumulating in me).

I appreciate the gesture. I was looking at Grants studies and it looks like most people are suffering from eye problems in this diet. A fact he just skipped past in his recent videos. I'm tempted to introduce a semi  skimmed every few days. They aren't fortified here.
