...I have no doubts that at some point we'll find out that all these thiamin supplements are bad news or at least are not the right approach and have side effects.

...

THIS^   I've seen this too often and even though you guys have hammered it into my head that the B-vities are essential for getting the detox done (and being healthy)... instead of taking supplements I will instead be swerving to a more B-sparing/B-rich diet...if at all possible.

That being said, my sweet, sweet kitty is on the rebound, and wouldn't you know it: B12 and B-spectrum shots were part of his recovery.  I will for certain be taking him back there for more of the same if he slides into anorexia and kidney failure again.

As my new little thread about B12 says, fixing the gut (with low VA) will help a lot, we need ALL the B's...and over supplementing any one is not a good idea... (the video there talks about how folate supplementation of grain products might be part of B12 problems)

I like Elliot from EOnutrition & I also think he’s intelligent. I’ve been emailing him about vA toxicity for a while now. He’s partially interested but likes liver as he had health improvements with it so he’s currently sitting on the fence I think.

@jaj,  In the video I posted on my B12 thread, they explain that the healing effects of liver-milk shakes was what led them to the discovery of B12.  I think we do forget that there is more than just VA in liver, LOL.

@tim-2 yes he is anti plant low carber who thinks that organ meats are good for you. I didn't started with this thiamine experiment due to him.. But due to fact that it really looks like I can have B1 deficiency.. Taking that one bottle- 60x300mg capsules of benfothiamin should tell me if I need it or not.. For some people it really is game changer.. Look at this video where they were using just high doses of normal thiamine hydrochloride..  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzZ1a8rnVy8&t=775s

@jiri

Accutane and to a lesser extent Hypervitaminosis A inhibits transketolase so it can mimic thiamin deficiency, thiamin supplementation won't be able to ease all the symptoms if that is the case.

That video is impressive at first glance, he mentions they are people with genetic thiamin issues.

@jiri I make a strong potent homemade gatorade with salt, KCl and MgCl which I take sips from everyday to keep Mg intake up.

@tim-2 I do agree with minimizing or avoiding taking supplements, but so far Alli-B1 seems to be helping, so will experiment with it for awhile, seems it could be necessary after accutane and high dose retinyl palmitate which have done.  Usually every supplement I would take would backfire, especially everything Ray Peat inspired.   All I use now are, K2 and Vit E couple times per week, mega small does B2 and Bcomplex, Alli, calcium carbonate and electrolytes.

Also curious what beer you drink daily? Ale, lager, pilsner, big brand names or microbrew?   I really enjoy beers!

On the topic of beer, there is a thing called spent-grain bread that I bet would be just loaded with the kind of fiber that soaks up VA.   (but that is not this topic, LOL)   If a person was thinking about nutritive beers, those that are worried about their copper might ask the brewer about whether they brew in copper or not.  I think the most food-like beer's I've had have been those made by monks, like Chimay.  (This is reminding me that I was promised a Birthday trip to the local brewery for lunch just before the big lock-down, I bet they are open for outdoor dining again...)  A case can also be made for making your own small beer, rather than heavy beer like Chimay.   https://ggenereux.blog/discussion/topic/small-beer/

@tim-2 You look at it just from vit A/accutane perspective. In my case that is just part of it. Other culprit will be high stress physical and mental and most importantly diet high in carbs and low in thiamine. I was taking B complex most of the time. But if effective doses for deficiency are even up to 1500mg for 6-12 months. That amount in B complex I was taking was a joke.. Will see in next couple of weeks. How this benfo works. Hopefully it will not start mercury detox from the brain. That would do more harm then good..

Haha yes @lil-chick we see it as the devil’s work but as you say it’s full of nutrients too. I said to Elliot that I’m sure liver was good for him...until it wasn’t! He’s quite young & probably got plenty of liver storage left.

@orion

Yes after Accutane it could be that you are better with a thiamin supplement than without.

I was looking at a few studies earlier today talking about sebaceous glands shrinking in vA deficiency. Quite a promising thing to read, I imagine we'll see some decent results as liver levels start to deplete.

Yeah I quit beer for a few months as I have a bit of a gut but it didn't help and I missed it so I now have it in strict moderation. I drink lager and pale ale. I go for big brands that use quality ingredients. I stay away from super hoppy microbrews, I like as little hops as possible so I like lagers best. And you?
