@puddleduck

I haven't consistently taken vitamin C but I'm now coming around to the idea of continuously supplementing with it as long as one has Hypervitaminosis A. I think Hypovitaminosis C and Hypervitaminosis A go hand in hand.

Very interesting, @tim-2. Thank you! In addition to the sulforaphane, maybe all the vitamin C found in raw fruits and vegetables is the main reason for Dr. Goldner’s success with a raw-exclusive diet for her most severely ill patients, since they’d be easily getting around 700 mg of vitamin C daily eating that way.

Looking through my Chronometer log, I seem to be getting around 300% to 500% for the RDA now that I’m consuming more fruits and veggies. But I could probably stand to get a little more.

@david

I agree and I want to reiterate that I do not see value in following a vegan low fat diet but if it can improve certain health conditions it's worth trying to understand why. I think it has a lot to do with more vitamin C and less vitamin A.

Re the 1995 study, fair enough. 4-oxo-retinoic acid is not all-trans-retinoic acid or 9-cis retinoic acid which are the hormone like metabolites that bind to retinoid receptors but it may still have a significant ability to affect genetic expression. But how much is actually produced in someone consuming a standard diet?

Re the lycopene quote, it depends if someone has Hypervitaminosis A or not. If they do beta carotene will probably be more toxic than lycopene. If they don't then it's up for debate.

Interesting quote about lutein.

I can say I react badly to lycopene after having experienced carotenemia. I was great with all foods before that, of course.

@puddleduck

by the way, I wanted to thank you for reminding me of the idea to separate beta-carotene foods from other meals, especially ones containing fats. I ate half a honeydew melon for breakfast a couple days ago (not very high in carotenoids but still) and nothing else. I was able to hit the gym later and it felt almost great! However, eating even low carotene foods with small amounts of fat will make me feel tired and toxic.

The thing I also try to not to forget about is the bile flow. Eating enough protein and salt, not overeating and giving the digestion a rest.

I’m glad to hear you had a good gym day, @viktor! 😃 That’s awesome! The more small and simple adjustments we can figure out to help us feel better, the less daunting the detox process, hopefully. 🤞

@puddleduck

Maybe I need to be schooled on sulforaphane but my opinion of it is low, I think the reason it boosts enzyme activity is due to its own toxicity. I don't believe in using plant chemicals to bully enzyme pathways, I believe in providing cofactor support to them so they can do what they need to when they need to.

Yep also that diet being very high in pectin and beta glucan may reduce enterohepatic recirculation of glucuronidated retinoids.

But wow yeah interesting if the vitamin C intake is that high then I think that may be the main beneficial factor at play.

@orion

Just to add to my response to you.

I think that liposomal vitamin C may be a good idea when someone is acutely ill with a virus. In this situation it can be hard to take enough ascorbate to keep serum levels sufficient.

For normal day to day use I think ascorbate and ascorbic acid is fine.

But what are your thoughts? I think you've done a lot of research into supplements over the years?

@tim-2 VitC is one of those supplements that I have never really researched.  It is definitely recommended in almost all diet spheres I have attached too.  I have never really had pro or cons to taking it.  Maybe now at close to 5yrs low VA, it will have a different effect.

Will try 750mg spread out, if anything extraordinary happens will report.

Glad to see you posting again, always appreciate your insight and opinions!

@orion sodium ascorbate is great form of vit C. I make it every morning like the guy in the video. Btw it is not "very alkalized" like the guy says. Obviously you are mixing acid and alkaline substance so it should be neutral and that is the benefit of sodium ascorbate over regular acidic ascorbic acid..

@orion

Thanks and likewise!

If you have significantly depleted your vA stores you might not notice much but if you've still got elevated levels of retinoic acid you may notice better gut health followed by better overall health.

What matters is the fasting serum ascorbic acid level. I think if people following a low vA diet got it tested at regular intervals they'd see it gradually improving, an inverse correlation with serum retinol.

@jiri I have powdered sodium ascorbate, so just take that in water.  Purchased it when I did some more vitC daily in the past with all the $million dollars I spent on every supplement under the sun haha 🙂

@orion "with all the $million dollars I spent on every supplement under the sun"

hehe I wish I had all the money I spend on pills LOL...

@tim-2 just did a round of penicillin after a minor sugery, and countered that with real fermented sauerkraut daily, surprising how much this has changed my gut health and motility!  Hopefully the continual low VA and now some extra vitC will assist.

@puddleduck sorry for all the of topic content!
