Smoking and vA

Page 1 of 3Next

Smoking has a range of negative health effects but much to the dismay of anti smokers a large percentage of centenarians smoke. Could smoking actually promote longevity due to depleting vA?

In this study cigarette smoke inhalation in rats halved serum retinol and liver retinol levels within 6 weeks.

The researchers said:

"The vitamin A depletion in our smoke-exposed weanling rats is consistent with other smoke exposure studies. When adult ferrets were exposed to cigarette smoke, retinoid catabolism increased, resulting in significantly lower levels of RA in the lung (21,22). Despite this increased catabolism, lung retinol concentrations were not significantly altered in that study. Although we did not measure RA in the present study, the decreased tissue retinol concentrations suggest an increased retinoid catabolism. The reason why significantly lower levels of retinol were not observed in the ferret study is not known, but may be due to differences in the age of the animals. Adult ferrets have larger liver stores of vitamin A and may have compensated more effectively for losses in the lung."

When I smoke I immediately get symptoms , I dont know if thats detox , but for sure causes something to stir up Vitamin A in the body

I remembered this thread about the same thing.  My loved one with kidney failure was a smoker but eventually quit due to lung cancer.   This person loved smoking more than anything.  Recently had to have cataract surgery.   The doc said the lenses were orange.  I sort of wonder if those carotenes started floating around more, without a home?

Cigarettes, alcohol, coffee, they all deplete vA. The more you know the more you realize you don't know aye... lol. Smoking is probably the most effective way of depleting vA quickly... and there is actual evidence for it as opposed to strategies like eating loads of beans.

They say alcohol with a meal isn't great because alcohol inhibits thiamine absorption but you know ethanol is the main antidote used to treat methanol poisoning... so perhaps it serves as a way to ameliorate the effects of a meal containing pectin?

Some people are very sensitive to tobacco smoke, I wonder if that is vA toxicity related...

I think of VA as a weapon and that is a theory on my part.  I've seen VA ointments work as antibiotics, for instance.

If I get dirt in my eyes, I wouldn't be surprised to find that VA has been called to the surface of the eyes, later resulting in redder capillaries, histamine itchiness, yellowish mucus etc.

I suppose that VA could be "used up" by coming to the rescue of lungs that are being filled with the foreign molecules in tobacco smoke such as ash etc.  A lot of VA could be needed because the surface of the lungs is huge.

This might also explain why some smokers feel they are more immune to catchy lung issues.  Perhaps because there is always VA hanging around their lungs.

I've heard it said here that pot takes VA out of the tissues, perhaps the reason is because it is sending it to the lungs to protect them from the possible infections that could result from foreign particles in the lungs.

Why is incense and smudge thought to ward off evil? Smoke inhalation is the most effective way to deplete vA... just a thought...

What if countries like France are more immune to a high vA diet due to so much wine, coffee and smoking? Until recently the majority of French smoked.
