Sh*t, they really do put it in everything 😳

I took the last lozenger  16 hours ago.  My tongue still burns ALOT!  Looks like Vitamin A/Carotenoids are likely the cause of my burning tongue plague that's caused me years of pain.

Yes, Liz, it's EVERYWHERE!!

Buyer beware!!!

I hope you are starting to feel better DWL. Thanks for the reminder to read all labels. I hate that you had that experience!

I ate a bean dish my mother-in-law made on New Years Eve and it turned out to have 40% RDI for A!!! Geez, I’m glad the holidays are over. Bella

I ate a whole foods diet for several years consisting of nuts, beans, eggs, fruits, veggies, grass fed beef and had very low zinc and magnesium on hair analysis and blood labs.  You can not assume that you are getting enough of any certain nutrient just because you eat a diet that is "known" to be full of nutrients.   There are at least a couple of reasons for this - toxcity (wastes good nutrients and makes vA more active) and lower nutrient quality of whole foods (debated by some - namely big AG).  Or if you unkowingly take too much of a certain nutrient through drinking water, etc... like copper (copper pipes) that is going to drive down zinc.  I am sure there are many examples of this.

As for vC - people taking megadoses have reported many benefits, ones you don't hear about when sticking to the RDA.  I don't trust the government to tell me what I need.  They may be right sometimes but there is too much fraud and coruption to not question their recommendations.  It is the government that says dairy is healthy.  BS.  So why trust them on RDAs and why should it be the same for everyone?

The above comment was about whole grains, and not Whole Foods. Many people eat a Whole Foods diet that is completely unbalanced due to lack of starch or an excessive amount of protein.

If you are eating enough minerals, your body will ramp up or inhibit absorption depending on necessity.  An imbalanced diet typically involves reduced absorption for good reason. Your body has little need for magnesium without enough fat or glucose to process for fuel. With lower carb diets, there is a lower conversion of T4 into T3, lowering your needs for zinc.  Mineral supplements are usually not the answer if the diet is missing certain food groups(tubers and grains).

The RDA is useful as a framework, and has both good evidence and bad evidence behind it.

As for vitamin C, it is not so simple. Even though humans have lost the ability to produce Vitamin C directly, humans have evolved the ability to recycle it and do without it at times. Check this out.

I am not sure of your points as regards to my diet.  Beans have a significant amount of starch, fruits have a lot of glucose and eggs/beef have fat.     I had many benefits of taking vitamin C and just about every account of people who have taken vitamin C supplements report significant benefits.    My benefits was less sunburn, less bleeding gums and less allergic reactions to bug bites.  So should I stop because someone says it gets recycled?  And I would hardly describe my diet as high protein, at most I would get 70 grams a day.

My point is that foods for some people aren't going to cut it for providing the needed nutrients because of big Ag ruining food and polluting everthing with toxins.

A lot of people guess on here whether one needs a nutrient or not - I used tests that looked at my blood an hair tissues/nutrient content and I had very high copper and very low zinc even though eating eating minimally processed foods and low magnesium/high calcium.

I was sick since I was a little kid-  to me that definitely indicates that at least some intervention is needed to speed things up in recovery.  I am older - I've read alot and done alot regards to diets and supplements and know that everyone's got an opinion and know what hasn't worked for me and what does and am trying to figure out the rest.

About RDA - never said it was all wrong or all right, all I said is that I don't trust the government.   Just like I don't trust reviews on Amazon - they may be legit but there is too much fraud to know for sure.

Thanks for the good wishes, Bella.   Spine pain returned.  Ugh!!  Today is better.

Lesson learned!

i'm thankful that the holidays are over, too!!  Way too stressful trying to cook for a crowd and trying to avoid unsafe foods while away from home.  I make enough food mistakes under "normal" conditions!! 😊

I've taken megadoses of vitamin C for a while and ended up with pretty high oxalates, now my joints crack all the time and I have to eat a low oxalate diet to make that go away. Apparently vitamin C gets metabolized into oxalates if there is a high amount of vitamin A in the liver... at the same time I'm low in vitamin C on tests so this is a pretty shitty situation. Just thought I'd share my experience. Not saying don't take it, but it might be worth experimenting with form and dosage.

DWL you have spine pain too? Could you explain where it is located and how it feels?

I woke up one morning years ago with a horrible pain in my upper back. It feels like knives cutting into my spine and the surrounded muscles were super stiff. No one has been able to explain what this is or where it came from and I have been a regular at my chiro's to be able to function. Rehab, x rays you name it. I would wake up crying from pain for years and have tried ecerything there is including new beds. Yes in plural. No drugs has worked for the pain.

One week of vitamin A free food it went away. Pain is gone and the stiffness also. If I eat anything with vit A it returns. I knew some foods affected the pain but I was never able to make the connection.

I am just wondering if your spine pain is similar to mine.
