To eat peanuts or not to eat peanuts?

PreviousPage 2 of 3Next

Thanks Guest. I completely agree somuch4food. No one person is ever correct about everything. He probably has good reason for omitting peanuts in general. I primarily wanted to see if there was something major I was missing on the A/carotenoid content of peanuts and not draw criticism toward Dr. Smith specifically.

I truly respect Doc Garret's work and efforts toward the issue. We are all in this together as people open minded enough to consider the validity of the theory after all.

Just reading through these posts. I'm uncomfortable with some of the comments about Garrett Smith. Without him I would know nothing about Grant Genereux's work. He is the only person (to my knowledge) trying to work with vitamin A toxicity. Him & Grant are on the same side. He's not going to get everything right but he's doing a good job of trying imo. He's the last person I would be criticising at the moment!

He charges (a lot) of money for his VA related services and he portrays himself as a professional so I think it's fair to judge him as a professional, to a higher standard than Grant who wrote free books and basically said "I was really sick and then I did this and it worked, look at all this evidence I found supporting my theory as to why". And still Grant seems more professional than Garrett.

Nobody is beyond reproof. I appreciate Garretts' forum/blog where he brings attention to a lot of interesting connections. Some of it is truly mindblowing but other things not so much and with this peanut argument it sounds like he didn't even read the study he was referring to.

I also think you can do more harm than good if you give bad advice, his food list seems very liberal and I'm sure it has lead to people trying his VA-restricted diet and not seeing much benefit because they were not restrictive enough, and then forsaking the whole idea of VA being bad. Some of his recommendations fly in the face of what Grant has written (and nutrition facts), like recommending butter and some green vegetables.

He (Smith) is still more open minded than 99% of the naturopath and other alternative practitioners. Try mentioning vitamin A toxicity to any professional and they would think you are insane.

My local naturopath wants me on D3, Fish oil and anti Candida bullshit supplements. She doesn't seem to know any of the studies and she wouldn't care to dig deeper. She learned all there is from her naturopathic school and that's that. The best she can do for you really is some vit C IV.

I agree, medicine both conventional and alternative is in a very sad state. I'm speaking from decades of experience in the field. :/

If I really, really needed a doctor beyond an ER visit for a genuine emergency I'd hire Dr. Smith.

Health Coaches (if you can find a good one) seem to be a decent option for one on one collaboration since they aren't constrained by governing bodies and law suits to the same degree as doctors!

Lots of wise words. Realised I wasn't logged in when I put my defence of GS comment. Now I've forgotten my password Doh! Anyway it's JAJ (Jenny). As you all say we are in the minority being interested in vitamin A toxicity. All my friends & family & people on my nutrition course think I'm completely mental so we all need to support each other 😀

Hi Jenny! I'm used to it by now (people thinking I'm mental)!

I learned a hard lesson about 4 years ago when my family wasn't supportive of me eating gluten free. Basically the first doctor who told me to stop eating gluten didn't do the proper testing so my family thought I was crazy and obsessed so I started eating it again- I was convinced at one point that I had an eating disorder. Well after a while I became sicker than ever and finally got a proper diagnosis! Needless to say from that point on it's understood that I only eat what agrees with me and my family respects that now. I don't really go into too much detail with them though. I might mention something one time but that's about it and I just eat the what works for me.

Hahaha! That was mental Bella!

Regarding the butter recommendation by dr G: i cannot have any. If I eat some I get sinus issues and my eczema crack up. Plus my severe (what I thought was chronic) back/spine pain return and I feel like sh*t for a few days. This might change in the future. Gluten on the other hand, i seem to tolerate just like before.

Peraonlly I dont understand why he clears butter as a safe food, esp not since it has plenty of vit A in it. And yes his vit A list is ridiculously expensive.

However, if I was in need of a new doctor, i would def try dr G. He did mock the vit A theory at first but he came around after reading the books. Most us probably did. This theory does sound mental, until one actually checks the facts. Then it doesnt seem so mental anymore. Most people wont, though. To each their own I guess 🙂

To stick to the subject, i mainly stay away from peanuts due to aflatoxin. However I have eaten it once in a while after quitting milk products (thought I was allergic) but before quitting vit A and afaik it did not cause me any issues then and I had it daily for a week. Have not tried since going "mental" though 😬

Hi Liz,

Bella here:)

I could not tolerate butter for awhile but now small amounts seem fine so I think things can sometimes change at least from my experience.

I am still using mostly olive oil-the Bertolli Light Tasting type that someone here mentioned.
