vitamin K2

I don't see any topic about this nutrient. Vit A depletes K2 in the body? I have transparent and sensitive teeth for long time. Wonder if it's from severe K2 deficiency.. Do you take K2 supps guys?

Hi @Jiri, I think it is best to get nutrients from food.

I have a son who is in his low thirties.  He is mostly made of cheese.  I know that because I went broke buying cheese for him when he was growing up!  Guess what?  He is about the only person I know, of his age, who has *zero cavities*.  Cheese is a wonderful source of K.  Also, dairy helps with oxalates.

Back when he was living at home and I was feeding him tons of butternut squash and other carotenes (bad mama) he did have gum problems that seemed to be getting worse and worse.  After he left home, his gum problems got better.  I think that gum problems and cavities might be two different things.    He doesn't actually run a low VA diet, but I'm sure he eats less butternut squash than when he lived here!

I have some areas of my teeth that I think are dyed yellow from carotenes and those are the areas that the gums are the sorest.  I figure it is a matter of time to detox.  I do feel that very slowly my teeth are detoxing and the gums are filling in.  I find that the teeth are the most yellow in areas that the brushing doesn't reach very well.  My son does think that dental hygiene was part of fixing his gums.

Young people bounce back from toxicity much faster than old, I've found.

@jiri I have taken K2 on and off. I was thinking about adding some again. I agree @lil-chick about cheese but sadly I don’t seem to do well with cow’s dairy anymore. For 30 years I ate a very cheese centric diet. Maybe I overdid it!

@jaj, My husband is very dairy sensitive, but has found that he can tolerate little wedges of high-quality parmesan.

@jaj I am the same. I would love to eat dairy, but I can't. For now I can eat only whey protein where is almost zero lactose and casein. I have really bad acne from casein. It's harder to digest protein structure like gluten which I can't eat as well.. I was taking Thorne vit K2 mk4 drops years ago, but at that time I was A toxic so it had no effect. Now I have some Jarrow mk7 caps so I will try that.

@lil-chick yes I would love to stop all supplements and just eat food. But I can't for now + the amount of K2 in cheese is small in comparison with vit A content. I was even making natto at home. That is much better source of vit K2 without vit A, but I don't want to eat soy again.. I think everyone should take some K2. Especially people on low vit A diet who where vit A toxic and probably have low K2 in the body..

@jiri I take k2 but the MK-4 form, MK-7 form didn't agree with me. It's pretty much the only supplement I take other than the sunfiber, it's the only supplement that ever helped my teeth sensitivity and they look fuller, I have taken this for years but I take small amounts, not more than 120 mcg. I hear you can make natto with other beans like black eyed beans, I have never tried but apparently with the culture starter it would work. I want to make tempeh with black eyed beans, this is the only bean fiber I was tolerating in small amounts, I think tempeh doesn't have much K2 if any though.

@luisa 120mcg is very low dose for mk4. I think you have to take doses in mg to see some results. When I was taking Thorne drops I was taking 15mg a day, but because I was vit A toxic and still taking and eating a lot of vit A I had no results with it. I would like to try it again, but it looks like Thorne now only makes drops K2 with D3..

@lil-chick thanks but sadly Parmesan would be the worst for me as it’s very high in free glutamate. It’s the worst cheese for that, along with Roquefort. It’s turned out that foods high in MSG/free glutamate are part of the seizure trigger for me. Why I’ve become so sensitive to glutamate in food is another matter. I never used to be. Used to eat Marmite by the teaspoon!

@jiri my teeth are getting very sensitive and I’ve been thinking about trying some K2. Your post has focused my thoughts. I’m just so supplement wary nowadays and would much rather get all nutrients from diet, however, limitations on diet mean some nutrients are hard to get. Free Cronometer very useful.

@ourania thanks for suggestion but that might be a step too far for me! I was a vegetarian for many years and still struggle with certain meats.

Fermented soy like natto and miso are options for Vitamin K2. You only need small amounts as natto in particular is very high. I make a delicious fermented organic beetroot juice with a teaspoon of miso and salt as a starter culture. One issue with cheese is that fat digestion can be poor making it seem like the cheese and other fatty foods dont agree with you. I found the 3-4 eggs a day for 8 months for higher choline fixed my fat digestion finally. I can now have 30-40 grams of Grana Padano unpasteurised cheese, which is similar to Parmigiano, on an omelette with no after effects.
