wrong forum, dumb question, but still.

Quote from lil chick on June 8, 2020, 10:33 am@diogenes, my intuitive self does believe what you are saying in the original post, that perhaps some of the yellow in urine is (the metabolites?) of vitamin A. And I think it is an excellent question and I've thought to bring it up myself!
A notion for you: when I have a late afternoon (alcoholic) drink, supposedly that sends VA out of the liver and into the rest of the body. It is my observation that the next time I pee after that drink there is a yellower look to the pee. When I don't drink during the same time of day, the pee is less yellow. Now, like most people I pee MORE after an alcoholic drink (not less) so I don't THINK it is because the urine is more concentrated.
I wanted to also point out, though, when JAJ came out with that super interesting 40/60 number, Pee and Poo are probably the major routes, but don't discount all the other ways I think I see VA leaving: in skin cells sloughing off (anyone itchy?), in body oils when you wash with soap, in pus (for instance, in pimples), in nasal mucus, in earwax, in eye discharge, in between your teeth when you have gingivitis, in pigmentation (acanthosis nigricans), in sweat (is your pillow yillow?), blood (including menstrual?), breastmilk... These are just my thoughts...

Quote from puddleduck on June 8, 2020, 11:13 am@lil-chick I have had chromhydrosis, which stains my pillows orange with lipofuscin, for most of my life!
You may have seen this already, but for those who have not Dr. Smith linked to some evidence that lipofuscin is made from carotenoids:
Accumulation of carotenoids in the brain and heart of animals on aging; the
role of carotenoids in lipofuscin formationhttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4753026/
Horrible to think of that stuff having accumulated in the brain! 😰
@diogenes Haha, I’m glad. 😁

I've seen breath mentioned in the literature as an excretion pathway, not sure how important it is though. Another reason to keep one's living space well ventilated!
@puddleduck
Argh shame that study isn't free to view. Oh well the title is convincing enough!
I read that wild deer get atherosclerosis. So it isn't just about cooking or animal products. Gotta wonder if it's the carotenoids in their diet playing a major role.

Quote from lil chick on June 9, 2020, 7:39 amInteresting about the deer. Makes me also think of all the toxins they are taking in (that humans put into the environment). We have deer here, and they are exposed to agricultural toxins by the farm next door, and they are exposed to lawn chemicals as well. Mining chemicals like mercury have been used in the vicinity, as well as mill chemicals like dyes and tanning chemicals for things like shoes. Whats more, there is a car dump nearby and all that implies. And I'm in the country.
But yes, I suppose carotenoids do add up! I suppose our ability to deal with them is arranged to last about a lifetime, and then we are up sh*ts creek.

Quote from Jenny on June 10, 2020, 6:39 am@lil-chick your post about excretion routes stayed in my mind & made me think about the problems I was having with my eyes a few years ago. I went to the doctor as I was getting these yellow spots on the line inside my lower lashes (not sure what you’d call that) - where I used to put lots of eye liner in the 1980s 🤣 (not that that’s related!). She said it was blepharitis & I needed to clean them off with baby oil on a cotton bud or optical wipes. I did that & they were a nuisance. I no longer have any problem with this now I’m along with my vA detox. I’m thinking my eyes were just dumping vitamin A/carotenoids! This fits with your idea that the body is excreting vitamin A in all sorts of ingenious ways.
An add on to the urine/bile percentages I posted here & on another thread. The kidney seems to have a maximum amount so during detox we may depend more upon bile. This is mentioned in the Gropper quote & Dr Smith made this point to me when I sent him the link. He thinks that bile is the major route during detox which is why he’s a big soluble fibre fan. I think we need to bear the urine route in mind too & keep well hydrated.

Good points , how much of the soluble fibre are you taking now . I can't seem to get the soluble fibre content in cooked lentils , is it 1.5 gms per 1/2 cup ?

Quote from puddleduck on June 10, 2020, 4:37 pm@lil-chick It is a bit scary to think of how many sources of toxicity exist in our environment. I would not eat wild game from where I used to live, because Agent Orange was tested in most of the forrest between two major cities, and then the extra drums were buried all over the testing site. People in the towns bordering the forrest are still dying of cancer at a higher rate than normal.
@tim-2 Interesting that deer get atherosclerosis. It would not surprise me if it is the beta carotene, even though it is odd to think about herbivores getting VA toxicity.
@jaj Wow, another connection to VA toxicity! How neat your blepharitis is gone now. 🙂

I don't think herbivores ever suffer from VA toxicity but I think it is possible that carotenoids themselves are harmful to them to some extent.
