Zinc - is it delivering more Vitamin A to peripheral tissues and harming them?

@orion "I would really like my skin to be less oily, still over producing sebum."

What about higher doses of B5? I am taking 500mg pills from now foods and it seems working. I take some higer dose biotin as well. But the B5 should really work. try 500mg capsules 2x a day for like a month.. It is also good for adrenals..

Hey @jiri  I did higher dose B5 decades ago when the theory first came out, it does cause significant hair shedding, but really does keep the oiliness away.  But once you stop sebum production seems to come back even worse.   Biotin always makes me more oily and causes breakouts.   I think I will test higher dose Zn for a short term experiment.

@orion this hair shedding can be from biotin depletion? That's why I take them both.. I am trying B5 mainly for adrenals

@jiri I think the hair shedding has something to do with messing up cysteine metabolism, but biotin depletion probably fits in there too.

@orion

Interesting to note that daily zinc allowance raises with age as the body accumulates vitamin A and eventually becomes toxic. Surely, once someone is depleted of vA, zinc tolerance (or requirement?) will probably drop as well.

@christian yes agree, makes me really think that right now, my requirements may be much larger than I thought, before going back down.  Experimentation time.

@orion keep in mind that you can deplete your copper.. I think it's better idea to take lets say 15-30mg of zinc daily for long term.. For me zinc lowers sodium for some reason so I feel dehydrated after taking zinc..

@jiri Yep good warning for sure.  I have been supplement free for about the last year, except testing with lactoferrin, my goal would be to use nothing but food.   But I will test a short term high dose Zn, see how a react, I have only ever used 15mg pico zinc once a day in the past.

In any case, you must be aware that zinc can be harmful to our health if consumed in excess. The maximum daily limit in adults is estimated at 40 milligrams. In the event of exceeding such an amount, it can cause nausea and vomiting to headaches and diarrhea. And if excessive zinc consumption persists, over time, it can cause low immunity, copper deficiency, which can produce anemia, and the decrease in HDL cholesterol levels, that which we popularly call “good cholesterol”. So you should never overdo zinc supplements.

@wavygravygadzooks

I've been there too: going carnivore for years and finding no relief at all. Even Grant doesn't dare to suggest any change in your diet; for sure he knows why doing whatever is not working. Do as you like, but maybe you'd be better off trying out what most of us are doing. It seems to me this experiment is a total success after 9 years of improved health for Grant and those who follow the same principles. In the end they were right (including GS, whose principles are almost the same as Grant's ones you can read in his blog and books).

About zinc, GS suggests beginning with the smallest dose that doesn't make you feel bad. But I think it makes little or no sense if you are taking a radically different approach.

I hope you get better soon. Like many here. Don't hate me for this post: I really wish you the best, but I don't think you are following the right path.

Last, but no least, please, be careful with sups, specially with B complexes.
