Activated charcoal comparison with cholestyramine

Page 1 of 4Next

Activated charcoal in the treatment of hypercholesterolaemia: dose-response relationships and comparison with cholestyramine.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2612535/

Serum triglycerides were increased by cholestyramine but not by charcoal. Other parameters, including the serum concentrations of vitamin A, E and 25(OH)D3 remained unaffected.

I think 3 weeks is too early to see a drop in serum vA levels and of course their test subjects did not stop consuming vA either.

Anyways, it looks like AC might be a better bile acid sequestrant than fiber?

Yes I've been tempted to take it once per day. Have been unsure about how it would affect my gut and nutrient absorption taking it long term though.

I think the most effective way to quickly remove vA (and a variety of other toxins) is to perform an olive oil epsom salt liver flush once per week.

Thanks, Grant! I’d forgotten I was going to experiment with this more on myself, but 4+ grams is a lot of capsules. 😝 Perhaps I need to figure out where to get them in bulk.

This study used 4.5 grams:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29804117/

They separated the dose into three times per day.

That is my main concern also. But if it were taken away from food (right before bed or something), maybe that would be enough distance apart from my noon/lunch supplements.

Not sure taking 4 grams of activated charcoal powder all at once is the best idea though...

have you been doing any liver flushes? it does seem to be the quickest way to dump bile.

The liver flush is effective because it binds bile by forming "stones" in the gut. It must be emphasised that it isn't gallstones that come out. If someone actually has gallstones they should avoid the liver flush and take things that soften and break up the stones.

@pano200

I haven't because I work 6 days per week fulltime and the last thing I feel like doing on a Sat night is a liver flush. I am considering doing some though.

@tim-2  "The liver flush is effective because it binds bile by forming "stones" in the gut. It must be emphasised that it isn't gallstones that come out. If someone actually has gallstones they should avoid the liver flush and take things that soften and break up the stones. "

Part of the liver flush is to eat a lots of apples or take malic acid which will soften, decalcify the stones. Also if your theory was right people would have basically the same results after each liver flush, but it is not like that at all. Most people don't have much stones coming out first couple of flushes. Because most of the stones and sludge is in bile ducts not in the gallbladder. So each liver flush they move little bit closer to gallbladder and then most people have xx liver flushes where is coming out a lot of all kinds of things from thick sludge, very small sand, to 2-3cm gallstones and once the bile ducts and gallbladder is clear. You can do liver flush and nothing will come out again.. This is typical scenario for people who have good bile production, but due to fatty liver, bad diet, stress etc.. the bile is very thick and partially calcified and stacked in the bile ducts and gallbladder.. For person like me where I had no bile production at all there are basically no stones after liver flushes.. So for me it is pointless and it just makes me sick..

@jiri

Almost everybody that does a liver flush has lots of stones come out, they can do dozens of flushes and still have many stones on each flush. Sorry but it is obviously wrong to think that these are coming from the gallbladder and bile duct. If people had this many stones people would be getting gallbladder attacks constantly and bile would barely come out. Gallstones are often excruciating. The stones melt at room temperature.. because they are made from olive oil...

The liver flush is like the low vA diet, all sorts of misinformation surrounding it but ultimately it's helpful.

@puddleduck  "4+ grams is a lot of capsules"  If you are thinking about taking a greater quantity then buying loose powder might be the way to go.  I think 1 tsp is roughly equivatent to 4-5 capsules.  I expect it would work out cheaper too.

I've been taking some last thing at night when I get symptom flares and find that helpful.

@tim-2 Not true. Many people do liver flushes for years and after some period of the time they keep doing them just to keep liver clean and there are no stones after the flush. Most people, obese, unhealthy, eating fried foods, smoking, high stress etc.. have thick bile and a lot of all kinds of stones and sludge in bile ducts and gallbladder. Gallstones are painful when they are big and calcified. But they don't need to be calcified. There is all kinds of stones made from all kinds of materials. Pls do some liver flushes before you start making conclusions like that... Btw people experienced the same stones just from eating huge fatty meal like pork knee or something. How you explain that? You need to understand that it is not about some magic with some specific protocols. The whole point is to mechanically clean the bile ducts and gallbladder from everything what is there.. That is accomplished simply by eating low fat diet for at least 4-7 days before the flush and than eating huge amount of fat at once.. People just use mainly olive oil and citrus juice, because it has very strong stimulative effect on the liver and the gallbladder.. But you can do the same flush with garbage vegetable oil without any citrus juice.. It would work the same.. You don't need to even cleanse the colon like most people do with epsom salt and enemas.. Drinking so much epsom salt just makes you sick... Just 4-7 days before eat very light foods with no fats. After that just drink at least 250ml of some oil and go to the bed. Ideally with some bottle with hot water in your liver. So it can relax and not hold what is in the bile ducts..

@jiri

You're wrong... People can do liver flushes week after week producing thousands of stones, young healthy people. Just because people that have gallstones can follow the protocol and release stones doesn't mean most of the stones for most people doing the protocol are gallstones...
