Betaine
Quote from Armin on December 17, 2022, 1:30 pmQuote from Jiří on December 17, 2022, 1:16 pm@armin is it any different from Betaine HCL that people use for digestion?
From what I understand, Betaine HCL needs to be in capsule form, otherwise the HCL could erode the teeth and cause damage.

Quote from Andrew B on December 17, 2022, 2:07 pm@orion it does have some oxalic acid perhaps that was the issue in the past. I dont presoak but you could to reduce phytic acid.
@dom I think I would boil it rather than eat raw.

Quote from Ourania on December 17, 2022, 11:02 pmI feel that taking more betaine (which might save choline) induces a need for extra thiamine. Is this true?

Quote from Andrew B on December 18, 2022, 2:56 am@ourania When emphasising high beef I found the nutrients on this diet that tended to be low were B1 shown by the numbers and B5 got enough but needed slightly more. With more choline I think extra B5 (1-5 mgs) might be needed from say mushrooms, eggs, chicken or potato being my highest sources. B1 my highest sources are organic spelt flour, sunflower seeds, eggs, mushrooms and potato so a restrictive diet may be low without trying to connect betaine with thiamine. Thiamine helps synthesis of acetylcholine also. Methylation improves the detox so that might be the betaine and thiamine connection.

Quote from Jiří on December 18, 2022, 3:16 amanother thing is betaine can push methylation and I am no sure if I under or overmethylate.. I am tired of 15+ years of taking all kinds of supplements which maybe created more problems(vit A) than solved. So I would love to just eat food and not waste more money, thinking and energy to take them. I have to create life for myself where I don't have stress or any kind of exposure to toxins of any kind like toxic people or EMF etc... That will be more powerful than perfect diet/supplements I think..

Quote from Andrew B on December 18, 2022, 3:52 am@jiri I wouldnt claim to be an expert in over methylation. The things we are doing generally will help. I also believe low choline is at the root of many of the issues. Eating 4 eggs a day has improved my absorption which for example reduced my need for zinc 22 mgs a day. Choline helps remove copper as well if someone is high and that can affect methylation. Eggs have some selenium which also helps the detox. Beef hearts, fish roe, goose fat, pork and beef tallow being some other high choline sources. Folates could be low on restrictive diet and that also helps methylation issues. Eggs have some folate. Beef I think has some. Beans being a good source. Iceberg lettuce which might help with nitrates also has a little folate while being low in carotenoids.
I've been doing a balanced diet throughout sometimes a bit low in B1 and B5 so I ate more chicken, mushrooms, eggs and occasional avocado. When I added betaine it was 'only' 75 grams a day of organic spelt wholemeal flour in pancakes to eat the eggs. It's only about 15-30 grams of cooked quinoa and about 20-40 mls of fermented beetroot juice each day so I'm making small changes at a time. People who go for the supplements are more likely to encounter this overmethylation if susceptible. Hence, I agree to do this mostly with food.
