Constipation

I’m new here and just started my zero VA diet yesterday. Had bison, lots of rice, sourdough bread, and raisins. I feel like I have a rock in my abdomen. I have suffered from IBS-C for years and have use magnesium and prune juice which has been effective.  However, prune juice does contain some VA. I rarely eat starchy foods so this is no doubt the problem. Any suggestions?

Having lots of rice does that to me. For some people, taking vitamin C can help, but for me, I just added potatoes - and fat - to my diet, and that has helped.

Cauliflower, parsnips, and celery root might help along with potato for extra fiber and low VA.  I cook cauliflower/parsnip/celery root in the rice for different flavors sometimes.

What helps me with digestive issues is eating a regulated meal, imitating the order of traditional Italian meals. The different types of food and flavors help simulate digestion. Additionally, moderate portions of each food group also helps.

Start your meal with something sour like sauerkraut and/or cured meat. Sip water/club soda with your meal.

Then start eating simple carbs like bread, rice, or potatoes. Add some fat and vinegar to the starches to make them more palatable.

Then introduce meat. Try not to mix in starches if your digestion feels sluggish.

after you had enough meat, then eat vegetables like cabbage, turnips, cauliflower or other light colored vegetables.

After the meal have a portion the fruit(pears, apples, grapes). If you feel full, have coffee or something bitter to aid digestion along.

Drink moderate amours of water a little after the meal.

Eat in a relaxed manner. Better to eat less and with ease than to eat more in a rush.

If you just have a sandwich, try to eat vegetables after your meal, along with something bitter. This should help speed up digestion.

So very interesting. I’ve noticed this progression in Italian restaurants but never realized it had to do with digestion.  Thanks for suggesting this; I will give it a try.

Getting enough fat and salt helps with this problem, apparently.

Hi guys! What kind of fat do you mean, and from which foods? Thanks!

For me that means butter, but any fat that's low VA, and your body is OK with, should work.

I eat almost exclusively white potatoes (3 - 4 kilos per day) with an added can or two of legumes a day (add salt to taste and some vitamin C / B12 pills) - and I am regular as clockwork : )  And I am very lean. When I ate animal products (no judgement) I was always constipated. It just about finding what your body likes and what it doesn't. Also - eating fat would clog me up worse - so once again, different strokes for different folks.

I guess it really is different for different people. For me, eating organic potato chips made with safflower/sunflower oil keeps me regular.
