Conventional beef vs grassfed beef

PreviousPage 16 of 17Next

I'm eating 200 g of raw ground beef heart every morning for breakfast. I got it from a butcher. It's a tenth the price per kilo compared to sirloin stake. So yeah, it's much cheaper. And as far as I could figure out, it should have zero vitamin A in it. There are also some androgens in the heart when you get it from a bull. Otherwise, you might get a boost in progesterone. I've eaten brain too in the past and tried raw testicle too, but both contain some vitamin A, so I stopped it. I think the brain is interesting for the cholesterol content. No one wants to eat those things, and they usually end up in dog food or sausages. Which is a pity. But I guess that's my nostalgic streak in me.

Most of the organs have not been rigorously tested for vitamin A with modern methods, so it is a bit of a guessing game how much vitamin A is in them. I agree broadly that heart seems like lean muscle meat, at least on the surface.

@jiri

I've been eating it off and on.  I can't say I've noticed effects from it either way.  I'm a little concerned about getting too much copper from it if I've already got copper problems, but there's not all that much copper in it.

How much copper would you say is in there?

@christian

The nutrition tables I looked at a while ago say 20% RDA of copper per 100 grams of raw beef heart.  Not sure how many mg of copper that is.

@christian  It has like 400-600mcg per 100g. Now I look at it it has also good amount of iron which is not ideal for me.. Hm maybe I will keep eating just ground beef.. Lower copper, iron, more zinc...

Hahaha, yeah, it certainly defies any common conception of what breakfast looks like. I wouldn't mind oats and apple juice either. Meat is so much more easily digestible.

Thanks for the response. I wasn't aware that there is quite some copper present in beef heart.

I eat 120g of oats cooked in 500ml water with added 50g of whey protein and pink salt. I eat this breakfast for like 4 months now and it works great for me. I can eat this breakfast at 5:15 AM and ride my bike to work where I walk and lift things all the time and my next meal is at 10:00 AM 200g turkey thigh with 100g basmati rice and some cucumer and pink salt. Zero drop in energy. So stable blood sugar that's exactly what I need from breakfast.. For me is very important to not add any fast carbs to that breakfast. That would spike my insulin too much and I would crash like two hours later with low blood sugar.. Btw I am drinking goat kefir now and it's great. When I drink it it feels like it digest instantly. 300ml at once and I don't feel it in the stomach at all.. I want to drink up to 1000ml a day. It gives me 2000iu of vit A. Will see if it's ok. It is my only source of vit A. With goat dairy I feel like my diet is complete. Finally good source of bioavailable calcium.. I also started with K2/D3.  I always had very bad nails. Now they are strong like crazy.. Hopefully my teeth will remineralize as well..
