Detox and teeth problems- suggestions/help

Page 1 of 3Next

I am about 10 or 11 weeks into the diet.  I noticed increased tooth sensitivity a few weeks ago when brushing and today I noticed that when I ate sunflower seeds I could feel the teeth roots more than usual.  I guess the sensation was on the pain side but very mild.  I had the sensation all over and not just a couple of teeth.   On Matt Stone's blog someone wrote in that they had more cavities after doing the diet which they thought was because of a vA def. but I think it was a detox reaction.    I've had bad teeth my whole life and am worried that I'll have a ton of teeth problems found when I go to the dentist next.  I have been taking vK2.  Do any of you have any suggestions in how I can prevent more decay, crowns, root canals, etc...   I was eating raisins but cut them out about a week ago.  About the only thing I eat with sugar are bananas.   I mostly eat lean beef and white rice right now though have gone through changing things in hopes of making my sleep better.   Thanks so much for any advice - I don't want to loose more teeth!

I'm learning more about the importance of vitamin C in protecting from vitamin A toxicity. It is very important and with this diet also being very low in vitamin C, people should make sure to suppliment with it vit C.

I hope that helps you.

I do take vC too though sometimes not everyday - thanks for reminding me of it's importance.  I don't think there are any downsides to supplementing it other than bowel intollerance at high levels.

I’ve been taking vitamin C recently and it seems helpful. I’ve just been using Doctors Best brand powder that I got from Amazon. I don’t do bowel tolerance levels though just take about 500 mg 2x per day.

I find Dr. Ellie’s oral care regimen as excellent for tooth and gum problems. I believe you can find most of her recommend products in local stores in the US and Canada.

I’m wondering if some of these issues aren’t surfacing because the immune system and flora is adjusting as the poison is leaving our body. Just speculating but I feel so good otherwise I’m not willing to believe it could be a deficiency.

Guest, my teeth were very sensitive early in the diet, beginning about the third week.  Also, my tongue and mouth burned.  A mild hydrogen peroxide rinse seemed to help a bit,  i swished the liquid a couple of minutes before expelling, then rinsed with plain water.

After five months on zero/low Vitamin A, my mouth and teeth sensitivity has improved, but still comes and goes.

Interestingly, the inside of my mouth, around my lips gets bumps and lesions  that are quite noticeable (to me) after eating the slightest bit of Vitamin A or carotenoids.

It appears to me that Burning Tongue Syndrome may be caused by Vitamin A toxicity.

thanks everyone for the suggestions, reports, and advice!

Try finding some veggies and fruit low in vitamin a. Probably need some more whole food vitamin c and/or potassium. Supplementing isn't going to replace an unbalanced diet. I think this is one of my biggest problems w/ the diet. Also, what if you can't eat potatoes or grains/legumes...what do you eat? Most foods high in vitamin c are going to have cartenoids. I guess white potatoes are a good source of vitamin c, but low in vitamin a, so if you tolerate those.

I use a potassium chloride salt on my food, before the diet I was eating a high potassium diet so yeah, not sure what that is doing to my teeth.  I was eating many black beans for awhile on the low vA diet but cut back and substituted white beans when I did eat beans to see if I would feel better though can't tell if that has made a diference.  I have eaten peeled white potatoes a bit here and there but didn't notice a difference either.   I haven't had stomach upset, or any other immediate symptoms  for many years so it is hard for me to tell if something isn't agreeing with me and it seems like many vA toxic problems are deferred and then you throw in detox symptoms = it is hard to tell what is going on.

The other symptoms of vA toxicity and detox are hard but having the teeth affected can really affect the pocket book and are a forever change 🙁    hoping the changes in what I feel in my teeth don't add up to a lot of work at the dentist office.   I took a vA supplement as part of a treatment plan from a naturopath for 4 years - bad on me for not heading warnings from all over the internet about too much vA.  I felt bad before because of fatigue and insomnia and regular doctors couldn't help me but at least they didn't tell me to do things to make me feel worse.

Cauliflower and white cabbage are approved veggies with vit C. Maybe add some of them to your diet alongside supplemental C? Also pineapple mayhaps? Your teeth issues could be a detox issue (past problems can reappear) but still, i am sorry you have to go through this. If you can afford it maybe check in with dr G? Or try higher vit C for a while and see if it helps.

From my personal experience, teeth and mouth symptoms are related to digestion issues.

I get painful gums from time to time, but since going low A I haven't had any teeth sensitivity.

I also rarely get an upset stomach or gut distress. My main digestive symptom is a dull lower back pain with mild constipation. I always thought that the back pain was from a bad posture while sitting at work!

Also, teeth damage is not irreversible. Your teeth won't regrow, but cavities and gums can heal. At my lowest point I had white marks on several teeth and they have since mostly disappeared.
