Fat

@armin inflammation, toxicity of any kind, hormone imbalance, all kinds of meds and drugs etc.. There is many reason why the metabolism doesn't work well and the person has hard time to drop weight. BUT if we are talking in genera calorie excess is still the most significant factor in this.. I am not saying that reducing calories all the time is how people should keep lean body. Of course the body will adapt by slowing down metabolism like it happens for most people who jojo diet and after 10 years of diets can't burn fat even on 1000kcal a day.. But all this is well known especially in fitness community. Bodybuilders are ahead of time and all the "nutrition experts" and scientists doing studies. They knew 30 years ago what people talk about now.. All I am saying is that nobody is fat because of one macronutrient or some type of food. But like @tobias said hard to argue with people who signed to some type of dietary religion like low carb, vegan etc.. If you don't know the basics of human biology and just talk about what you want to believe than it's waste of time for everyone to do this kind of debate.(I am not talking about you just in general..)

@jiri no offense meant to you, but so many bodybuilders die young that I don't trust what they do as the healthiest. It isn't natural to have the muscles they do. They have to do very unnatural things to get them, so again, not the best way to get fitness info in my humble opinion.

@jessica2 "I contend that if one loses weight on caloric restriction, and I think Jason Fung made this point too, it's because you necessarily restrict carbs too. "

I never restricted calories from carbs. You just slow down your metabolism doing that and lower your energy and muscle glycogen. I always just lowered intake of fats. When you have carbs for energy and protein for muscles why would you keep eating more fat? Doesn't make any sense. Now if you are doing keto of course you will cut of carbs, but active people who need carbs that's not an option.( don't even start about how you don't need carbs to do sports or any kind of higher intensity physical activity. If someone thinks that it is mostly people who don't do intense physical activity hehe)

"If you are also very active, that in itself causes lowering of insulin as well. "

You are not losing weight from exercise because it lowers insulin but because you are burning calories. Is this topic for real? It must be all joke lol..

@jiri it isn't hard to understand... When you set a calorie limit, you stop at the limit, and that in itself restricts carbs.

Again, the body doesn't register "calories". It treats macronutrients in metabolically different ways. You don't "burn" calories like a fire burns fuel. It's not a useful metric for human metabolism.

My own experience is when I’ve done a high fat diet I start losing weight like crazy and I eat a lot more calories when I do a high fat diet. But if I do just animal protein and high fiber such as oats or beans I start gaining weight and muscle mass like crazy even though the calorie intake is much much lower than the high fat diet, so I personally think the reason why is because the high fat causes cholestasis for me and  causing fatty liver possibly, my face also looks much unhealthier when I do high fat. It’s not good for me to lose weight as I am already an underweight type.

Now I’m done with both of those and I am high sugar and that’s works best for me. Ice cream FTW.

@jiri  I understand all this quite well. If it's easier to understand this way this is also Jason Fung's analysis: If you take 100 calories of a donut and 100 calories of broccoli the body reacts to them metabolically different. The reactions and metabolic cascades are so different in fact that that the calorie unit is not relevant or useful. You can't honestly say the body treats one hundred calories of a donut and one hundred calories of broccoli (or fatty steak) in the same fashion.

Not sure if this will hold any water here for some, but Peskin briefly addresses the calorie theory in this vid.  Start shortly after 6 minutes in.

Thank you! Very interesting. What he explains seems to fit with my understanding of the human body. I'll have to listen to him some more.

@jessica2 Was just curious how did you find this Peskin guy because I have never heard of him before until you mentioned him.

With all the knowledge about PUFA being toxic to the thyroid are you not concerned about that with all this new seed oil consumption? Lots of people on the RP forum mention that PUFAs start off by having an anti inflammatory effect in the body but over time they start causing real damage and havoc.

For example 2 months into low Vit A I started eating organic smooth almond butter, at first it was making me feel great and skin looked much better. But then gradually my thyroid and immune system started shutting down, I was freezing the whole time and very ill.

@jessica2 I agree with this, BUT that doesn't mean that calories don't matter and to say "you don't get fat from saturated fat" is just completely insane.. Or to say that you get fat from rice I mean really? Of course you will get fat from saturated fat if you consume calorie excess. The body will store fat first as body fat. That is the only easiest way for the body to just put the fat to fat cells. From carbs you can make something like 10g of fat in a day which is laughable in comparison with how much dietary fat can the body store in fat cells... But like I said debating with religious anti carbers is waste of time.. It's like debating with vegans that meat is not a poison..

@alex-m The first thing to understand and most important is i'm not downing gallons of industrial supermarket seed oil. Most days it's a tablespoon of cold pressed organic Evening primrose oil pumpkin seed oil sesame oil and grape seed oil. (Edit: not a tablespoon each mind you, but total)

Secondly ray pete is all about theory. Even his followers say that ray pete probably mostly didn't do a lot of his own suggestions. I feel better than I have in years. But perhaps in the next month or so I won't, but I will report on that.

I found out about Peskin here, through PJ puddleduck and I even heard Jenny mention him and his ideas before.
