Histamine response to oatmeal?

Page 1 of 3Next

Hi all,

Today (Sunday) is day 3 of zero A. And last week I was low A leading into Friday.

Yesterday (day 2 of zero A) I started mildly itching all over. Assumed detox might already be starting tho thought that was pretty fast.

This morning after I showered, my face was very red, like mild hives. I hadn’t yet eaten anything. As of this evening, it’s no better. Slightly rough to the touch. I did have a small amount of bourbon last night.

Again I was thinking detox.

But now I’m wondering if the (gluten free) oats are to blame as I only reintroduced them on Friday, the day before I started the mild itching.

I’ve eaten oatmeal on and off over the past several years, with no issues recently. Tho recently it’s been the Quaker Oats instant packets, and this past few days were the real oats, and certified GF.

Any thoughts? Of course I could stop with the oats and see if it gets better. Or take an antihistamine?

Thanks!

Sadie

Hi,

I am about a month in the detox.

I have had the same exact extreme itching and redness on and off. I have also reintroduced oatmeal wheat free as well. It is better now. I think it's detox

I eat the Aldi brand oatmeal with no issues, but itch all over and have stomach issues off and on throughout the journey.

I am about 8 weeks in and the ithing has calmed a LOT! It gets better. The itch increased a lot for me the first few days and have been pretty bad some days. But this is the first winter in many years I have not been forming "winter eczema" (dry insanely itchy spots) on my body. Still have very mild intermittent itch, mostly a bit on leg, forehead or neck (over thyroid area). But not even daily anymore 🙂

Thanks for the replies! I’m relieved I don’t have to give up my oatmeal 🙂

I’m confused as to why just a day or two off VA would start detox... shouldn’t I have been having these symptoms all along? Why is my body recognizing that I’m not ingesting it? Is it because my body is releasing some VA now that it’s not coming in fresh?

The way I understand it as long as you ingest vit A, or other toxins your body is trying is best at reducing the damage from the foreign substances. When you stop, it stops limiting damage and starts the recovery process.

The fire analogy is good. If your house is on fire, your priority is to stop the fire. If there's fuel (toxins) being poured on the fire (inflammation) constantly, the firefighters (immune system) just try to limit the damage and save what they can from the house (body). When the fuel supply is removed, the fire can be put out and repairs (healing) can begin. Some parts might have too much damage and need to be teared down and build anew (detox).

So just discovered that Oatmeal has Lutein + zeaxanthin    180.00 mcg    per 100g serving so that works out to ~420mcg per 1 cup dry oats, which I have been eating every morning.

I think I might change to rice for breakfast as well, until most all my symptoms are gone.

I noticed that most Lutein/Zeaxanthin supplements come in 20mg/4mg, so this is 50 and 10 times more then from oatmeal.  Grant mentioned relapse from using those supplements, so I suspect it to be in those larger amounts ranges.

@ggenereux2014 do you recall how much you supplemented?

EDIT:  Sorry amounts where calculated wrong, 1 cup dry Oats seems to have about 145mcg Lutein/Zeaxanthin, so smaller, but might still be unwanted extra A for some.   1 cup of dry Oats should be around ~80grams

Hi Orion

Yeh that  is annoying. I have just stopped my regular oatmeal breakfast to see if my insomnia symptoms improve.

I was buying the oat grain and making fresh rolled oats and had no obvious digestive issues. So far it has been 4 days and

I have already noticed an improvement with my sleep. Although I am looking forward to being able to eat it again.

That stinks. I'm glad I was only eating oats a couple times per week. Mainly I was having a hard time finding organic and certified gluten free or I probably would have eaten them more often! Thanks @Orion.

I'm not really sure. But my guess was that it was a standard 20mg dose. Bottle of 60 softgels, and I stop on about number 58!
