how to moisturize the skin?

I agree. I am using a moisturizer on a as needed basis. I was doing fine without any for a while, but now that the temperature has dropped to minus 15 celsius, my hands are getting really dry and need a bit of help to prevent wounding/bleeding.

At -15 I think you can be forgiven ;).

My dad went to school in the north of England, and during winter they’d be given animal fat to smear all over their bodies before going outside to play sport!

This was me - I was using my phone.

I’m going to give lanolin a try. I was concerned it might contain vitamin D but apparently it has to be irradiated for that to occur.

I had really painful eczema on the backs of my hands every winter for 16 years -- dry and scaly, red, and cracking and bleeding. I never did find anything I could rub on that would help -- tried Eucerin, and various oils and creams.

A few years ago, I was astonished to discover that blocking air contact worked amazingly well. I was wearing a pair of nitrile gloves for a few hours while doing a project in the kitchen. When I finished and took the gloves off the skin looked great. Most of the little cuts were calmed down and substantially healed.

Since then, whenever my hands get bad, I put on a pair of gloves for a few hours and continue with my day. After a while, the gloves become annoying and I  take them off. Last year, the eczema patches spread to my wrists. I would wrap them in Saran Wrap / clingfilm and then put the gloves on my hands. Same relief effect.

If I understand Grant's comments on eczema in ETFOH, dryness causes the sebaceous glands in the skin to release oil. If this oil contains retinoid acid, then the skin is in trouble. I think covering my skin with something that prevents the air from drying it means that retinoid acid laced oils are not released.

I started a low vitamin A diet in early November 2018. My hands are significantly better this year. I've had some occasional flare-ups and go back to the gloves.

Surprisingly, when my skin gets overall itchy, topical magnesium oil helps a lot. I know some people find topical magnesium to be itchy (and I did, too, at first). But if I get into bed and can't fall asleep because my skin is all over itchy, what calms it down right away is to get out of bed and spray on magnesium.

For a general moisturizer in the winter, I've been using straight sesame seed or sunflower seed oil. I rub the oil on right before getting into the shower. This way I'm not totally greasy when I put my clothes on and the shower water doesn't dry me out.

I have been trying out what another person on low vit A has recommended and it works for me, not only to moisturise the skin, but to supplement vit E, which helps detox of vit A. I mix a tbs of Now brand vit E oil with 750,l organic sunflower oil (Dr G recommends refined). In the morning I put this on my skin and in the evening magnesium lotion (there is diy version and store bought). Dr. G recently posted a recipe for that.

750ml

Ah this is great idea, thanks!

Can you post a link to the kind of sunflower oil you use? Also, do you know where Dr. G's recipe is? I have been using one that has a lot of other ingredients in it and that makes me nervous.
Thank you!

Any thoughts on using extra virgin olive oil or jojoba oil as a moisturizer? I love moisturizing using oils, I just worry it'll interfere with the detox process so i havent moisturized in a while

I just started the diet, but in the past I’ve used jojoba oil for my eczema with some success. It definitely does not aggravate my skin, and sometimes is able to calm it a bit (perhaps because it contains vitamin e?).

I’m also trying to figure out what to use on my skin through this process, so I’m interested to hear others thoughts on this!
