It depends on how much of the pectin remains and how much methanol is present after use of pectinase. But yeah pectin removed fruit juice may be better.
I drink bottled spring water mostly (to avoid fluoride) and drink coke when I want something sweet. I don't drink apple juice, aside from the methanol issue the fibre and sorbitol etc promote gas and flatulence.
I do drink small amounts of organic not from concentrate pomegranate juice and also some blackcurrant juice. Pomegranate juice is traditionally known for promoting longevity. There are great studies on it too. It decreases the activity of flora that convert choline and carnitine to TMA. It's probably got a fair bit of carotene which doesn't worry me since the rest of my diet is low in it. Blackcurrant and red grape juice have some of the benefits of pomegranate juice I think while being low vitamin A.
Including certain herbs, certain spices, garlic, olive oil and certain fruit juices in the diet is probably a powerful way to reduce TMA production and heart disease risk.
I think most of the heart related benefits of red wine come from the polyphenols in the grape juice used to make the wine

Quote from tim on July 21, 2024, 3:38 amA lot of soluble fibre in our foods is galacturonan-based polysaccharide which can release methanol during digestion. Pectin is galacturonan-based and gut flora liberate large amounts of methanol from it during digestion. Check out the link I posted on the previous page of this thread.
Pectin is found in fruit, vegetables, legumes. I think some pseudo grains like quinoa may contain methanol releasing galacturonan-based polysaccharides too.
I think one apple contains about 2g pectin. If you've been consuming two to three apples worth it's significant but I doubt it would cause health issues by itself.
I want to emphasize that I think it's a bad idea to try to avoid foods that contain pectin but it's possible that chronically over consuming these foods could cause liver stress due to formaldehyde intoxication.

That message above is to you.
Insoluble fibre doesn't release methanol.
The type of soluble fibre that doesn't release methanol is also the one that has been well studied and has health benefits, beta glucan. It's high in oats, barley and mushrooms.

Yeasts produce beta glucan as a structural material. They also produce alcohol as a waste product of energy metabolism.
Beta glucan does not release methanol or ethanol during digestion.

Psyllium's soluble fibre is heteroxylan and does not release methanol as far as I know.

Quote from Janelle525 on July 30, 2024, 8:15 amHello all,
I'm not doing good lately. I'm allergic to grass and it's peak grass pollen season here, so I have resorted to using an antihistamine.
Then a few days ago a good friend was hospitalized for a bile duct blockage. All she told me was that they needed to put a stent in, that went good, but then the next day her husband said she needs BIG prayers. Yesterday he said 'critical day', so I've barely been sleeping, worried as hell. I've never been through this before with anyone I care about. She has three kids and plays an active role at their small church which we have been going to. So if anyone could please pray for her! Hoping for a good update today. I know a bile blockage is very serious, as we are all well aware around here how important good bile flow is. They have been trying to eat 'healthy' lately, likely a lot of salads, low carb, low calories, I know they get a lot of backyard eggs from people at church, but I don't know if she eats them she was trying to give some to me recently! I'm so fed up with the health world lately. It's like we get social status if we reach the pinnacle of clean eating and weight loss. She was already very thin, if she does come through she will be weak for a good long while.
Anyway, just trying to distract myself, obviously not doing so well!

I'm not suggesting this is the cause at all but liver fluke is something to be aware of.
It's best to completely avoid eating raw foods apart from peeled fruit.
Rural living, spending time near wetlands, and interacting with horses, cattle and sheep are additional risk factors for liver fluke infection.
Ants can also be an infection vector so it's important to poison any ants around the home.
I'm not so concerned about most other helminths but there's a few really nasty ones.
Liver fluke infections often cause serious damage to both liver tissue and bile ducts.
It's hard to diagnose liver fluke. Antibody tests can be accurate however they don't necessarily help to diagnose an active infection.

Yeah that was my first thought, I'm sure the doctors have her on it, I don't give any health advice to these friends. Very hard to stay quiet with everything I'm learning. But good news is it sounds like she is out of the serious serious state, so hopefully she turned a corner.

Sorry I didn't see you posted this comment until today.
Wow I hope it isn't a liver fluke!! That would be very hard for the doctors to figure out. I haven't gotten any updates on her condition I will try to text the husband, I just don't want to bother him I'm sure he's more than stressed out right now.
