Quote from leap7 on July 15, 2020, 2:47 am@orion Thanks! Another question if you don't mind: How long would your muscle knots would last? My muscle knots have limited my full range of mobility and it'd be nice to get an idea of when I can get back to my normal self again.
@jiri I have been doing massage, using transdermal magnesium, and taking magnesium chloride baths as well, but so far the knots are still there. I will keep trying though, and also start supplementing with calcium because I think that's an electrolyte I may not be getting enough of. How long did your knots last? Do you know if the low vit A diet has affected development of muscle knots? Thanks!

Quote from leap7 on July 15, 2020, 2:53 amSomething else to add: I have been getting nose bleeds. These started around month 3 of the diet I believe. At first they were quite mild and didn't occur often but now they are occurring both more intensely and more often. They tend to occur around my period. I think Ray Peat says they are correlated with higher estrogen levels. Today I got a lot of sun and I had a nose bleed later today even though it's not really near my period. I know they are listed as a common detox symptom. I used to never really get nose bleeds, but I did start to get a few mild ones near the end of when I stopped the Ray Peat diet. Overall it's not a huge issue for me. The most intense they have gotten was last month when I believe I got two in one day? And I think I have had a few nose bleeds in just one week.

Quote from lil chick on July 15, 2020, 5:49 amRegarding the nosebleeds, I wonder if our mucus membranes are suffering due to ph (acid)? There have been some posts about urine being acid during detox, maybe all our fluids can get acidic? The inside of my nose can be an unhappy place, and many have said their nasal allergies are bad. There has also been talk of other mucus membranes being unhappy during this passage.
I suppose that this may be because of retinoic acid, but perhaps it could also be due to "off" electrolytes. Or both.
The mind goes to baking soda. I used to follow a naturopath who was all about baking soda and baking soda IS an electrolyte. However, someone here told me taking baking soda can goof up your b-vitie absorption. Once I took too much and it did goof up my gut temporarily. Perhaps it is a matter of amount.

Quote from lil chick on July 15, 2020, 6:01 amOne thing I've noticed about myself is that a good combo of 1. stretching and wiggling around to keep things loose isn't optional and 2. I'm often not using my body symmetrically. Both ideas are important.
Carrying a heavy bucket? switch sides. half way. Dig to the right? Switch hands and dig to the left. Look in the mirror and force down the shoulders (or shoulder). Chin level and back of head up. Sit up properly in chairs. Feet flat. Walk with the entire foot.
All my muscles are tight and stretching and warming up muscles by wiggling them around seems to be a part of life.
Rest: also very important during physical labor.
Don't forget to smile 🙂 not joking, it really helps.

Quote from Jiří on July 15, 2020, 6:57 am@leap7 I have muscle knots mainly in the summer when it is hot and I work hard. So that is basically "overtraining" from chronic repetitive motion + dehydration... I don't have knots if I am not doing any hard work..

Quote from Orion on July 15, 2020, 1:56 pm@jiri I do use MgCl every day, usually drink it, sometime spray on skin. But it never helped with knots and muscle soreness.
@leap7 Some knots last months it seems for me, had a really bad one on my right shoulder/bicep area, took weeks and weeks to get better, that was before I started Ca and Vit D. Now they only last a few days if I get one from working out to hard. I think the longer we are under low VA dieting helps as well too.

Quote from Orion on July 15, 2020, 5:30 pm@tim-2 yep was doing 200 pushups per day, but the was early in the detox starting in April of 2019, in the late summer and fall, I over did it on wide arm pull-ups and got some serious muscle knots in shoulder biceps area, took many weeks of daily rolling to work it all out. I think those early days of detox, did quite a number on my muscles in a bad way, it think it was lack of calcium, I was quite strict on rice and meat only.
Also wanted to ask you what types of fish you are eating most?

That's impressive. Did you see much muscle growth or strength gains from doing that regimen? My understanding has always been that reps that high will give mostly endurance benefits. I do side to side pushups where I'm putting most of my weight on one arm at a time but I normally only do about 30. While doing low vA I've often been tired or unmotivated to push myself physically.
The fish species in Australia are mostly different from Canada I think? I eat Hoki and Whiting. I'd say Hoki is probably slightly lower vA than Whiting, Whiting is a smaller fish with a bit more oil content. When I buy fish fresh I'll normally buy snapper. I don't have squid often but I enjoy it, super low vA and very high in riboflavin, the only downside nutritionally is that it is high in cholesterol.
I just wanted to share this related story on here:
I normally make sure I avoid any seafood from Asia. I slipped up this year and purchased some frozen prawn rice dumplings as a one off thing. I suffered through a week of food poisoning because of them. I was advised to call the company so I did and the lady I spoke to requested that I take a photo of the box and send it to her. I complied with her request. During the call she kept saying that they wanted to send me something special and I was thinking to myself that I sure hope it isn't a voucher for their food. I gave her my postal address. Weeks later and I am no longer thinking of the incident, I get a notification that I have mail down at my PO Box. I take time off my work and walk into the city and check my postal box. There is one letter sitting in it. It's from the company that made me sick. I open it and it says that they've sent me something special to apologize for "not having a satisfactory experience". In the letter were two pairs of the small black plastic chopsticks that are often used for takeaway purposes branded with their company logo! LOL! It actually brightened up my day. It was so insulting and ridiculous that that was my "something special" that it cracked me up.

Quote from Orion on July 15, 2020, 6:53 pm@tim-2 Didn't see huge gains with 200 pushups, but it made me realize that I am capable of much more endurance, wish I tried this stuff when I was in my teens and 20s! Now further along in the low VA, my body responds better to exercise.
When I was visiting New Zealand for work while back, got to fishing out on the water with a co-workers boat, we caught snapper and ate them that afternoon, fish has never tasted as good as that. If I had access to that I might eat more fish. Most fish here would be salmon, cod, halibut, usually days old, not very appealing, and I think most salmon is farmed.
Special chopsticks, hilarious!
