Low vitamin D after over half year on diet

Page 1 of 4Next

Vitamin D came back 73 nmol which is pathetically low. I had followed Grant advice to not supplement. I have been getting a lot of sun in the summer and previously on trips. Should we supplement? Every doctor, medical professional says yes. I live in Canada

I'm literally afraid of supplements at this point haha... How about one of those lamps that gives you D to use in the winter?

Where in Canada? Some places like Toronto are basically at the same latitude as southern France.

Did you measure your Vitamin D before starting the diet to know whether it has decreased or not during the diet?

I'm skeptical now of the claims about Vitamin D. Vitamin D proponents claim that basically everyone are deficient no matter where they live. If you live in the north you're deficient because the sun is so weak, if you live in the south you're deficient because your skin is so dark. If you're a white guy living in the south you're deficient because you're not spending hours outside every day with your shirt off.

People saying we have this new epidemic because back in the day people spent way more time outside than we do now. I'm not sure even that is true, but whats often neglected is that back in the day people typically wore far less revealing clothing because of cultural standards. There were no miniskirts, t-shirts or tank tops, shorts were only for boys and not something adult men typically wore. We have never been as permissive of showing skin and being half-naked in public as we are today, so it doesn't make sense that modern culture would somehow promote insufficient sunshine exposure.

If Vitamin D is practically non-existent in food and is so difficult to obtain from sunlight exposure, then maybe we are actually not meant to get so much of it. I think VA toxicity actually does a better job of explaining certain observations that have been attributed to Vitamin D, like how Scandinavia has a very high prevalence of auto-immune disease (there is a very high intake of VA-rich foods in these countries, such as dairy, liver products, carrots and spinach, and cod liver oil used to be popular as well) whereas Russia which is on the same latitude, does not. Anecdotally I also know a lot of people who hate being in the sun yet have no autoimmune issues, and others who spend as much time outside as they can yet still have autoimmune issues.

In 2011 my vitamin D was 61 with a range of 30 - 80 ng/mL.  They also did a bone density exam at that time that showed I had osteopenia.  I was shocked.  I had supplemented vitamin D and was still jogging 6 days a week. I concluded that a normal vitamin D and high impact aerobic exercise did not help my bones.  I also think the doctor was confused, too.  I think she expected me to have a low vitamin D.

I agree with Colleen that it isn’t the low vitamin D it is too much vitamin A.

I have not been retested so I don’t know if there are changes.  I have been eating a low vitamin A diet for 5 months and amazed at the improvements to my skin and mood.  I hope my bones aren’t being leached as they were when eating lots of beta carotene and vitamin A.

I live in Toronto

Vitamin D in December 2018 was 103 this is when I started low A

Big decrease and like I said I been getting sun half naked last month. Sun seems to have detrimental effect on me: causing gray hair on chest and shoulder and brown spots on my hands and neck. I am Only 33

Did you supplement before low VA?

My whole life I supplemented with between 3-5k iu a day but I had stopped the year I got toxic because I was doing this carnivore no supplement. I was however drinking raw dairy, fatty fish, liver ect

Even 103 people consider low-ish.

I think I will go back to 1000iu daily. Still thinking about it

This is a good video from Dr. Smith: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOXvxOqmlzg

Apparently, the higher your vitamin D, the sicker you likely are. He obviously advises against any type of vitamin D supplementation, as it leeches calcium from your bones.

Vitamin D leeching calcium from the bones sounds like the silliest thing I've ever heard, but nothing would surprise me.

One of the ways people got D in the olden days was from pigs that went OUTSIDE.

Pastured pork is a thing, you might turn to the WAPF to find a farmer.

Lard was the number one fat.
