Retinol in eggs and dairy
Quote from Tobias on November 23, 2023, 12:26 amWhile both eucaryotes and procaryotes selfishly dump toxins on their offspring, it serves an important secondary function, namely acclimating their young to a toxic environment. It's basically a form of mithridatism, which prepares the next generation until conditions improve.

It is WELL KNOWN already that large sustained doses of retinol causes toxicity.
It is well known that large doses of retinol can cause toxicity when consumed daily for many months or years. That's the common knowledge. It's similar to warning that eating toothpaste can poison you with fluoride but not mentioning anything about the toxic effect of consuming fluoridated water.
I was warned by my OB not to take retinol in my multivitamins when I was pregnant with my two daughters.
There is a widespread understanding of vitamin A's potential for teratogenic effects, the concern is not with the health of the mother.
I stupidly ignored that and went with WAPF nonsense that said I needed retinol. We don't at least in the amounts they recommend. And thats known.
It was a mistake but not due to stupidity. You probably did more research than normal driven by a deep care about doing the right thing. Very few people most of them scientists have a clear understanding of vitamin A related physiology. Everyone else is just parroting what they have briefly heard or read on the subject.

Interesting idea, can you give us a couple of examples for animals?
I can't see how vitamin A in mammalian milk is a toxin. If retinyl ester in ruminant milk was a toxin then a ruminant would never metabolize as much retinoid as it does, ruminants with higher BCMO2 expression would have been selected for early in their evolution.

If I cut myself, I'm opening the door for microbes to enter. I'm guessing retinoic acid is there to greet them while also promoting cell differentiation by signaling growth hormones to assist with closing the wound. Carotenoids might not be reactive enough to perform this hypothetical function, or does so more slowly. Perhaps it also keeps the eyes clean by disintegrating microparticles similarly to a detergent. I'm just speculating, since I don't know for sure. Point is, it might be entirely a toxin, but also useful in some way, just like pesticides. Overaccumulation sucks tho...
As for the animal example, I wish I had a study demonstrating this, and there might be one out there. Alas, all I have is circumstantial evidence, and listing it is just going to come across as throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks hehe. But if it seemed intuitive, it might be worth keeping in the back of your mind as you're sifting through the literature. I'd be able to orally explain why I'm rather confident this is the case if you're using skype or discord or whatever. Writing isn't my forté.

Quote from Pawel on November 23, 2023, 6:52 amQuote from Jessica2 on November 23, 2023, 5:52 amAlso as an aside to this thread, there are many water soluble toxins that do not make their way in to breast milk; iron is the biggest example.
Why isn't iron in breastmilk? Because its toxic to the baby. Milk is basically modified blood - without iron. Somehow the body has the wisdom to do this?
I'd like to research and see what the copper content of milk is...
Why would you consider iron as toxic?
Iron is an essential element for almost all living organisms as it participates in a wide variety of metabolic processes, including oxygen transport, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis, and electron transport.

I read correctly that milk and eggs contain retinol per se, not retinyl esters nor retinoic acid, correct? Or did I read wrong?

Fair enough, but the same can be said about every nutrient in excess. For example we can die, if we drink too much water at once.

For me the idea is that "crazy" that I have been hooked and until I read enough, I will most probably try this experiment with low vA for some time, because solely of scientific curiosity while reading about it in the background.

Well, no wonder. Starches are very obesogenic as they structurally raise insulin. I hope you know what you are doing with these seed oils. I am not touching any of these.
