Taurine - wow (TUDCA?)

PreviousPage 2 of 3Next

Oh boy, I just came across something that might explain my issues with Taurine and H2S production...it looks like excessive magnesium intake can lead to overgrowth of Desulfovibrio bacteria in the colon, which are the primary sulfate-reducing bacteria that lead to H2S production.  Magnesium is the one supplement I've been consistently taking in high quantities for years in an attempt to fix muscle twitching and cramps.  I would still bet my cells are starved for magnesium, but probably due to a lack of Taurine rather than a lack of magnesium in the blood.  I have been circling the topic of magnesium somehow causing dysbiosis for a long time, but had never come across a clear connection until now.  Guess it's time to back away from the Mag and see if that enables me to take in more Taurine without the nasty GI effects.  I suspect that Taurine is probably the most effective antidote to Vitamin A toxicity that exists.

So, how'd you go with this?  Did you replace the magnesium with Taurine and notice a difference?

@seanmc

My diarrhea basically disappeared after I stopped taking magnesium.  The hydrogen sulfide gas didn't disappear as quickly, but it seems to have been suppressed after I started taking probiotics again (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria blend by Seed).  I haven't gotten around to trying taurine supplements again yet...I hope to at some point, but I'm enjoying not have terrible GI problems every day at the moment!

In reading back postings on the forum today, I found the  taurine thread to be particularly interesting as I supplemented with taurine and later TUDCA several years ago.

The supplements were  not taken simultaneously.  I supplemented taurine several months on and off with no appreciable results.  TUDCA was supplemented about six months, with no noticeable positive results.

I began low vitamin A in July 2018.  In July 2022 I decided to re-introduce taurine.  Having read that taurine has a short half-life, I systematically supplemented every 1.5 hours with ten daily supplements of 500 mg.  I’ve since changed to an 610 mg at two hour intervals.

Benefits: calmer, sleep is more restful, much improvement in constipation, eyes more moist (had not had excessive dry eyes), . . . .

Before my low vitamin A regime, I did not have the positive results that I am now having.

My main vitamin A toxicity symptom is retinal degeneration.

Posting on the forum is difficult for me.  I hope what I have written will be helpful for anyone considering supplementing with taurine.

That is interesting, I never seem to have pro or con affects from taurine, but maybe that changes after 4yrs of removing VA from the body.

@luke, I tried TUDCA for 2 moths (500mg from Double Wood), I didn't notice any improvements in my symptoms, however I noticed that my liver flush was producing a lot of sludge, perhaps the product of accumulated TUDCA in my liver. I stopped releasing sludge after I stopped taking TUDCA. I will be doing my 6th liver flush in 2 weeks since I recently resumed TUDCA (nutricost brand this time). I will be reporting back.

@jean Hi Jean,

Great observation about the liver flush and the TUDCA. I have performed 18 of them over 2 years and stopped because I did not found regular results. A few produced great improvment of my psoriasis, as well as huge mental clarity/happiness the next day and improved transit/stool color for the following week.

Some brought nothing. Some brought worsening of symptoms.

This is why I stopped. But after digging back in my log, I discovered that the one that did brought improvment where the one I did when I was using TUDCA.

I have currently started pharma grade UDCA (2months ago) and I will start again the liver flush. I have written a whole post about it recently here, you can go read it if you want. But the main thing is that UDCA is hydroPHILIC and all other BAs are hydroPHOBIC. So this is why UDCA can dislodge "stuck BAs" in the hepatic ducts and cures cholestasis. I do believe that it is very slow to work tho (most study shows nothing before at the very least 6months, up to more than 1year of 10-20mg/kg pdc per day)

That's why I'm planning to stay on it for at least a year (500mg with BF and 500mg with dinner) while starting liver flush again, which should speed up the process.

Ps : Are you French (asking because of your name) I'm a French Biologist, don't hesitate to shoot me a pm if you want to chat about this ! Good luck

Salut Mat,

I also have had inconsistent results with the liver flush, but unfortunately never had the mentality clarity/happiness you described earlier. I've experienced some temporary symptom improvements, which lasted for a couple of weeks at most.

Yes I'm French, I'll send you PM to discuss further. Many thanks!

@mat, How can I send you a pm? Couldn't find the option on your profile. Thanks.
