Quote from tim on March 30, 2021, 6:46 pmBoth sunlight and smoking deplete vit A and carotenoids. Smoking depletes vit A like nothing else, on my YT channel I cover some evidence for that. Vitamin A breakdown products formed from sunlight or smoking are toxic and carcinogenic but if you are poisoned with vit A or Accutane you may create more harm by not depleting retinoic acid as fast as possible. Sunlight exposure is more natural than smoking but this is the first time in human history we have not been exposed to smoke. Cooking food produces many carcinogens and is unnatural too. I've been careful to avoid telling people to smoke. I personally smoke one Manitou organic cigarette per day, don't start smoking half a pack a day...
It's easy to ridicule this idea just as it's easy for low information people to ridicule a low vA diet because it goes against commonly accepted dogma.

Quote from Jiří on March 30, 2021, 11:41 pm@tim-2 Sun finally arrived to Czech Republic. I started also eating some eggs like 3-4 a day. Will see if that cholesterol/choline will help my liver in some way. I am still under 50% of RDA for vit A. So I don't think I can build up toxic levels of vit A again especially after two years of keeping A like under 500iu from plant sources.. I am also eating oats for like 10 days now. The first week I felt like shit. Bloated, more acne. Now I think I am pooping better so hopefully it's really helping with detox..

Smoking in particular? Or does any kind of tobacco/nicotine use help?

Rather than nicotine being helpful I believe most of the vA lowering effect of tobacco smoke is caused by substances like Benzo(a)pyrene which are present in any kind of smoke.

Hi Tim, I'm quite interested in this could you please link to your YouTube channel? I've been wondering recently whether it actually depletes VA or simply decreases serum levels by encouraging liver storage

Quote from wavygravygadzooks on April 25, 2021, 11:32 am@oliver @tim I think your body has processes to eliminate Vitamin A without having to blast it with oxidative damage. The oxidative damage speeds up the conversion process, but that just means you've got more toxic forms of Vitamin A getting sent to the liver...not exactly what you want when you can't get rid of it fast enough in the first place.
If you're a hunter-gatherer who isn't overburdened with Vitamin A stores, then exposure to UV and smoke would help to keep your Vitamin A stores to a minimum. However, you could argue that the consumption of Vitamin A is necessary and intentional for its function as an antioxidant in these instances, rather than arguing that exposure to UV and smoke is necessary to keep Vitamin A stores low.
The ubiquitous storage of Vitamin A in animal organs suggests that it has a regular function in the bodies of animals, whether as an antioxidant, immune system armament, or something else. Natural selection would probably have led to more effective elimination of the substance if it were purely toxic, and as a biologist, I am a firm believer that things only make sense in light of evolution.
