The Seborrheic Dermatitis thread

PreviousPage 6 of 7Next

@mat , SD has become not as bad as before the diet. There were times when I was clear, however it is something that always come and go. Rosacea has showed initial improvement to later return as it was. Later it has improved after H. pylori eradication, about 30-50% better than before.

Do you have seb derm on your cheeks and forehead? You don't want the H2O2 near your eyes. My experience over many years is H2O2 rapidly clearing up seb derm, I'm not sure why it's not helping you.

@grapes That's interesting. My sd seems to stick around all the time, like I have no "flare up" and remission cycle or anything it just sits there 24/7.

@tim-2 I have posted a picture of my sd before / after h2O2 page 4 of this thread - it has some effect for sure. But can't clear it somehow

@mat , what do dermatologists say, they confirm it is SD? For me today to sd to go to remission I need avoid sugar, alcohol, go to sun ... Rosacea is more likely to "sit there" all the time. Anyway, in your place i would try low vit A diet (not necessarily hardcore), in my case it has definitely reduced the severity of sd.

@grapes I've seen many. And I have done skin biopsies that confirmed it as well. I will for sure keep going with the low A until I reach the desirable serum lvl and will assess when I'll be there ! Thanks for your insight.

@mat

Yes, in the last message I was commenting on the photo.

Could you have seb derm + something else like rosacea? Seb derm normally occurs on the beard area, upper lip and nasolabial folds.

@tim-2 Could be something like that. IDK. I have seen multiple weird SD pattern for sure, and sebum rich areas are exactly where my SD is. Hot steam allow to "take the skin peeling off gently" and then H202 is more effective, but def not enough sadly.

I'm gonna try something soon based on further research on SD. It's a cream with a specific form of GSH that can easily go inside the cell + Hyaluronic acid (but it's the GSH that is key in the study as skin cell redox is perturbed)
I've been trying so many topical "killing agent" (fungal, biotics, h202..) and it never help except the h2O2 a bit.

I'm gonna focus more on the skin cell redox for a while and see. Can't hurt ! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC6930516/

Also, I've been digging this oxydativ stress pattern futher. It's obvious that there is SOMETHING (could be vA, could be something else in my case) that is generating a shit ton of ROS and cell lipid peroxydation.

In SD people, we see elevated SOD, elevated (or lower) GSH, elevated (or lower) GPX, low serum vE, low serum PUFAS. We also see low immunoglobulin. We see an overall disturb mineral pattern.
I recently found something that saw elevated Malondialdehyde which is .... mostly generated by the peroxidation of membrane polyunsaturated fatty acids ! Sooooooooo we have low serum PUFA not because of some sort of deficiency, but elevated peroxidation of the PUFAS within cell membrane ! So this would also explain the low vE that is used to counteract this massive oxydativ stress.

Then we have this elevated MDA (ALDH anyone?) https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2405844021007246

The hardest thing is to find WHAT is (are?) causing this chronic oxydativ stress load.

Those darn aldehydes pop up everywhere.

This diagram gives lots of ideas for NOX upregulation which increases ROS. I’m sure there are many others.

@tim-2 were you not scared of putting hydrogen peroxide on your skin at first? My local pharmcy says it is used as a bleach.

@mat maybe this old rosaceagroup thread might be of interest to you: has anyone tried oat groat? - The Rosacea Forum (rosaceagroup.org) I used to make this mask, and the reaction was quite intense. Chitinase supposedly breaks down both Malassezia and demodex, so it was an interesting try. I have not returned to this, because I assume the oat groats contains lutein, but maybe I'm wrong.

Personally I've had super intense peeling/flaking skin on forehead and cheeks every autumn/winter since starting on this low VA diet. I look like a red beet. I just thought it was the VA being expelled from the skin that made the skin cell turnover really high, hence my peeling, but maybe it is just seb derm... I'm going to give the hydrogen peroxide a try, I think.

@sand What about a apple cider vinegar application.  Say 50/50 with mineral water, would this be helpful or effective in seb derm?  Low pH for moisture barrier to kill off mites
