Vitamin D fast depletion on Vitamin A toxicity

Page 1 of 8Next

Since I got Vitamin A toxicity , I have been racing so hard to keep up my Vitamin D levels , its been rather hard . I never had any issue with low Vitamin D before toxicity , but I have been depleting my Vitamin D levels pretty quickly since after , despite the fact that I take vitamin supplements and  take a sun bath on the sunny beach ( in bali ).

I think the assumption Vitamin A antagonizes vitamin D is in fact true, but I am wondering if the contrary of it true as well ?

I didn't go out in sun or took any supplements since past 3 weeks and I have had severe bone pain / muscle pain and fatigue . Supplementing and sun bathing again , now symptoms are gradually getting better  .

This explains that high amount of Vitamin A depletes Vitamin A.

Any thought on supplementing with a higher does of Vitamin D for faster recovery ??

Hi @r-2,

Yes, I agree that vitamin D blunts the toxicity of vitamin A. I think this effect is because it binds to the same cellular receptors. So, vitamin D just rate-limits the amount of vitamin A getting into the cell. It does not directly attack the vitamin A molecule. However, it buys your lipid and detoxification pathways more time to deal with vit-A.

But, I’ve never supplemented with vit-D. I was told that supplementing with it is not very effective, and it is best to get your vit-D from sun exposure. So, I don't have any firsthand experience with supplementing with it.

Hmm… Bali, beaches, sunshine… that sounds pretty nice compared to our Canadian winters.

Grant Pls next time you will be doing blood work can you measure your ceruloplasmin as well? I really want to see if vit A is necessary for ceruloplasmin synthesis..

The test results came back for Vit D3

Its around 21 , but my pain in joints as if I had no Vitamin D at all . I suspects there are some other issues ( deficiencies ??) .

can it be arthritis or gout , I have been carnivore for last 6 month ( with white rice   ) , has it increased my Uric acid ? any suggestions?

Hi @r-2,

Are you exclusively eating white rice, and never brown rice? If so, you could be running into a thiamine deficiency.

@ggenereux2014

Yes ,I have been eating only white rice for few months now . Occasionally I drink coconut water , But I think its not that high in B1 .

I think its thiamine deficiency as well. Btw if you could please co relate my symptoms

1 : Dry nose
2 : Peeling skin off side of lips
3 : fatigue
4 : Pain in joints , specially in legs ( muscle and joints )
5 : Insomnia ( I never was insomniac on vitamin A high diet )
6 : Dry mouth , bad taste
7 : Anxiety and panic attacks
8 : Blurry Vision ( initially my eye sight got so much better on carnivore diet , now its back to blurry  could it be thiamine deficiency??

What are the foods you recommend for me , so that I don't get any deficiencies . how about  potassium , vitamin K , vitamin c. do I need to worry about that on carnivore diet ?

Thank you so much grant

All your symptoms are also symptoms of vit A toxicity.. Anyway I think good B complex is essential. Also some vit C like 250mg ideally in form of sodium ascorbate. If you eat meats like beef, pork and some legumes or pseudo grains like buckwheat with your rice. You basically cover all your vitamins and minerals except calcium. That's why I started eating some cheese( low fat with lower amount of vit A..) because I think that eating under 300mg of calcium a day for long time is not a good idea... I was trying calcium supplements but it doesn't agree with me. Also absorption from supplements is crazy low..

My Diet includes

1 : Egg whites and 1 whole egg
2: Rice , beef (with fat cut) , chicken breast

Hi @r-2,

I think most of those symptoms are that of vitamin A toxicity. It’s consistent with what other people have reported. I don’t have a super clear understanding of the mechanisms, so I can only tell you what I think is happening.

As we go low on vA intake, the liver starts to heal, but in doing so more retinyl esters are released into serum.  Thus causing the detox setback cycle.

This then places a higher demand on the B vitamins because they are needed to facilitate building the ADH and ALDH enzymes. But just limiting your carbs to white rice is a bit of a double hit because the B vitamins are needed to process the carbohydrates of the rice too.

I’ve been pretty consistently (about 3 days per week) eating brown rice. I also eat black beans almost everyday. I think that’s probably one of the reasons why I didn’t encounter this detox setback.  I also found brown rice to be a good source of fibre. Of course, people could just directly supplement with the B vitamins too.

I’m not sure about vitamin C & K.  I don’t have a strong opinion on it one way or the other.
