Genuinely not trying to lead you haha. I have a gut feeling that VA is NOT necessarily responsible for IR. To me, Grant’s theory works quite well for “autoimmune” diseases, but when I look at heat maps of countries that are dealing with high levels of autoimmunity vs high levels of obesity, they seem to be quite different.
Another thing is, in my experience I feel like I know many that are overweight, but they aren’t necessarily sick in the way that I see sick. Meanwhile I’ve never had weight problems yet I’m dealing with a domino effect of autoimmune disease and illness atm. This is obviously anecdotal and doesn’t mean much, but in my head it lends to the BMI and autoimmune worldwide population observations that I have made.
IIRC, researchers have induced insulin resistance in rats just with fructose (pretty much just sugar), but that seems too simple to me.

Quote from puddleduck on June 11, 2023, 4:09 am@tommy The first year I stopped eating vitamin A, I was drinking HFCS and/or sugared beverages and eating baked goods with white flour and sugar pretty often to help me reach my high-caloric intake. I wanted to test Grant’s hypothesis here:
https://ggenereux.blog/2018/10/08/obesity-causation/
I lost a hundred pounds without restricting my sugar intake, so it held up for me.
However, I likely exacerbated my thiamine deficiency doing that, I think, so... 😑 There are more factors than one. Like, I’ve heard from a few individuals who have hypothyroidism, that just lowering vitamin A for years hasn’t led to weight loss.
There’s some evidence weight gain allows the body to store toxins in the adipose tissue until it can deal with them. It’s better for the toxins to go there than the brain, at least, I guess? Still causes problems, there, of course... But when I was anorexic and underweight I had mental health problems that went away when I forced myself to get obese, basically. So there are some ways I feel obesity is protective, but then you have obese people who reversed health problems by essential starving themselves on raw vegetables. Basically the opposite of what helped me. It’s complicated!

Quote from lil chick on June 11, 2023, 9:10 amI've often been confronted with the idea that energy is one of the most important things that food gives us.
One of the really good, intuitive farmers I knew didn't mind giving day-old white bread to his flock of chickens, and I asked him if he thought it would set them off-kilter nutrient-wise, and "No" he replied, "they need a lot of energy, especially in winter".
Hummingbirds and honeybees are regularly fed pure sugar water to excess without problem. It's interesting how much energy they expend.
I guess that bears do eat a lot of sugar, especially fructose, and do put on weight. The energy is then slowly expended through the long winter.
A surprising thing about white sugar in the sugar bowl is that it is half fructose.
I've never had much of a sweet tooth (except as a child) but I do feel it increasing a bit now that I am eating more intuitively. It's a (vitamin A free) flavoring to me now, though, not a food group.

Be as triggered as you are. Not much I can do either way. I am not on here to find people nor dance around problems anyone here has had with each other or someone else. I am here to learn and publish as openly and accurately as I can. The goal is to find out what I can avoid that hurts and what I can add that helps as fast as I can. And to let others know what my experience is for what it is worth.
In all beliefs I already know I am wrong. No matter how much I learn, I will always be wrong and in great need to learn better and more. To improve, I need to recognize that fact and learn what I need to change and test for improvement next. To that end, Garrett is recommending folinic acid now. He is still a hard skeptic on B6 and B3. B1 has so much history and documents about good effect with minimal if any side effects so it is a go. He is also still skeptical on B2 if for no other indicator than color.

From my brief experience with Garrett and the crew on nutritiondetective.com networks, we are all learning as we go. If nothing else, it gets acknowledged constantly that we all react differently to everything. It is up to each of us to learn all we can and adjust as we go. My graphic lesson came with charcoal. Everyone cautioned me about it constipating. So I started carefully. Noteworthy though that now that I worked up to a tablespoon plus per day, it clearly has the inverse effect on me. My guts slow down when I forget to drink my charcoal water.
Who knows maybe Garrett changed since his exchanges 4 years ago - both his attitude and his opinions on what works and what does not. So far he has changed his mind openly, honestly and easily in my exchanges with him.
When I can I will ask him what he thinks of choline and its sources. His biggest objection to eggs is sulfur. Given my gut's reactions, I have to agree - for me. Who knows on you? But then the odds are I came from a much different direction than you or anyone on here. I was paleo/keto for 12 years with backyard chickens and I love brassica. Between eggs, allium and cabbage, I am sulfur man. During extreme pain in first quarter 2023, eliminating these foods relieved much pain. And I stink a bit less like the devil. Upping molybdenum has also helped deal with my guts' brimstone smells.
Now for my speculation on edema, swelling and leg pain relating to liver and kidney function messing with lympahatics. At the point where I was getting online with minerals, fiber, charcoal, leg soaks, uvb, melatonin and I started sleeping better, my lymphedematic legs started giving me less pain allowing for longer better sleep. Not sure what was the final link that pulled me through. I play with eliminating and pulsing factors to get a better feel. The goal is to sleep well with zero supplements. So did my sleep improve my legs letting me sleep better or did my legs improve allowing for improved sleep?
Meanwhile at the same time my sleep improved I finished reading Grant's books. On further review I noted his molecular diagrams for retinoic acid and for urushiol. 40 years ago I had poison ivy bad enough to lay me up for weeks. Since then I have had many more bad bouts. Bad enough to cause arthritis and slow kidneys down. Alot. I learned hot and cold rinse techniques to minimize histamines. Am all too familiar with urushiol's charms. What stands out for me is that as my lower legs improve, the joints especially ankles hurt the same way. The burning itch and pain is identical with one difference. I have no rash. I do not dare scratch and the skin is not really itchy. The burn and itch is deep. It starts about 10mm in and goes to bone. I have to be careful when I walk. Bumping my ankles both hurts like a massive electrified bruise and at the same time feels fantastic like scratching an itch I cannot reach.
Looking back I have had inexplicable poison ivy bouts in mid winter. Now I think these were not urushiol toxicities, but retinoic instead. I guess our tissues frequently react to the two toxins similarly. So I continue to work my lower legs with soaks, rebounder, walks, uvb and red/nir and sleep. As I do, the deep itch seems to fade as it has so many times before in the last 40 years. Hoping your improvements come as quickly and profoundly as mine still are.

it sounds like your detox was going too fast and the eggs helped slow it down. a few people on another blog have used this idea. they call it putting on the brakes. getting more choline probably does help too but the body is supposed to make sufficient levels of choline by itself. might be better to resupply depleted minerals and aminos to destress detox (increase RBP production) and increase choline production. I think @andrew-b
mentioned molybdenum and thiamine earlier.
I stand corrected for claiming that Garrett's biggest objection to egg intake is sulfur. Sulfur is an issue. His livestream today and his latest twitter thread outlined his main issue with egg intake.

Had not realized how much eggs increase vit A metabolism and storage, besides the increased amount of vit A taken in with eggs. So he advised to use them as a brake as needed and to know what we are doing by taking them in. Long term, there is an increased price to pay in detox.
Interesting points on insulin resistance. Ate lacto ovo decades ago for 14 yrs. Ate huge amounts modeled on triathlete Iron Man Dave Scott's diet. He (and I) took in 15 to 25 thousand calories daily. I remember my most consistent symptom being bloody noses at least opportune times. After dominating triathalons Scott retired and changed his diet to zone 40-30-30. In '96 I did the same and improved radically. That's when I learned my bloody noses related to diet. it was easy to reduce the bleeding by eating around 2k calories daily. Any splurges resulted in frequent inconvenient bloody noses.
Did 40-30-30 15 years and then switched to paleo/keto. Noted many more improvements over 40-30-30. Also noted that bloody noses were still a problem when I splurged even when I kept my splurges restricted to fats. In last 20 years, worked with diabetics enough to see similar symptoms. One poor soul was treated with cauterization in ER because they lacked understanding. Now as I bring carbs back in I find the same problem. As I enjoy fruit again, I do not always stay within a zone / paleo paradigm. Sometimes, I eat more dates than I need to. So I have my own undeniable signal when calories in are excessive.
Re: energy expenditure, Wim Hof and Tim Ferriss have brought out some notable ideas where thermal maintenance plays key roles in health - way beyond the adrenal rushes of cold shock. Staying at one temperature all the time is as problematic as sitting all day. The hummingbird was a great case in point. Had for decades thought they mainly take in sugar and nectar. Last year started watching them more and read about their migrations. Given their size, distances covered, their heat loss rates and calories from carbs vs fats, I guessed they must be eating huge quantities of much more than just carbs. Took more than a few hours of digging to find out they are serious predators. They eat skads of bugs. No wonder I always see them around dragon flies. Given the extremes of their lifeform, there is probably much we could learn from a detailed analysis of calories input and output on hummers.

Why Too Many EGGS May Be Shortening Your Life (HINT: It's NOT The Cholesterol!)
Eggs are a fave food in Twitter-land, w ppl claiming they're 1 of the healthiest foods
If you're open-minded, you need to see this research
Then ask why you've never seen it before

But I agree with Andrew that it’s kinda insensitive to tag Jenny in posts promoting Dr. Smith...There’s understandably a lot of emotion around this topic due to the harm Jenny experienced while she was a patient of Dr. Smith’s, and I think it is important to be respectful towards individuals who have expressed they aren’t up for debate around it.
I started the anti-egg thread in the hopes of creating a space for that type of discussion, and so people who wish to avoid it altogether may more easily do so.
