Hi John,

Yes, I am assuming that the RBPs eventually get expelled.

My diet is listed in the last chapter of P4P.

The only significant change that I’ve made in my diet was switching out the red kidney beans for black beans.

I now occasionally eat white bread (no milk or dairy). I don’t have a bad reaction to bread, but I find that my digestion is just more regular and I feel lighter when I don’t have bread.

Very occasionally I’ll eat some almonds too.

The only other thing that changed is that I now just seem to need to eat less. I’m now down to eating less than one cup of rice (measured dry) per day.  I still eat about 6-8 OZ of bison / beef per day and about 8 OZ of black beans. I find that to be a lot of food.

I was unable to start a second animal experiment, just due to needing to travel too often, and other accommodation issues. Additionally, I’ve since come across another zero vitamin A study (~1970) done on rats where the animals were fine in to about their 33rd week with no signs of VAD.

But, at least one other person has started another VAD experiment, with mice. It is currently underway.

This is super interesting Grant. I’m assuming you feel good on this amount of food which flies in the face of the amount of calories we are advised to eat. I personally feel terrible if I go below 1500 and prefer 2000+ to feel my best and I’m a petite menopausal female. Perhaps my calorie needs will reduce with time too. I’m sure it’s more affordable and convenient.

Hi Bella,

Yes, I feel just fine on that amount of food. Maybe I’ll need more calories when I increase my level of exercise. Right now my daily exercise routine is pretty much limited to just doing a 15K cycle commute.

Do you mind if I ask if your weight is stable? I can eat about 1500 for a few days without feeling bad but if I keep it up longer than that I start feeling worse. Maybe plenty of calories helps us handle the release of stored A and once our levels are low enough we don’t need those extra calories?!?

Hi Bella,

Yes, my weight has remained the same ~ 163 lbs for the last several years.

My blood pressure has always been on the lower side also.

My thyroid is on the low side m, tested 2 months ago just before the peak of my symptoms.

TSH 1.13      (Three years ago it was 2.6)

t4 free 1.4

t3 free 2.6

t3 total 79

My head symptoms and sleephave gotten better except my hands and feet joints are aching with pins and needles.

Looking to test again soon.

@john, I have low thyroid as well, though it is a little better now. My levels were lowest when I was consuming a ton of carotenoids. I read somewhere that thyroid hormone converts beta-carotene to vitamin A, which makes me wonder if low thyroid is a defense mechanism.

I can’t help but think the thyroid should improve once A overload is under control. One of the thyroid transport mechanisms is also involved in retinol transport. Maybe someone could explain it better than me.

@eliza hmmm could low thyroid just be a symptom of high beta-carotene, since it’s using all the thyroid hormones in conversion to A?

I also read on selfhacked I believe that too much  of vitamin D blocks thyroid hormones receptors since vD closely resembles or fits in somehow.

I’m thinking now what most likely tipped everything over was 5000iu of vD I was taking for three months every other day. The overload I was taking of A for the previous 9 months was already taking its toll on my health.

I went to a free health fair this morning and my non fasting total cholesterol was 151, blood pressure was 110/80 and blood sugar was 60. It had been 2 hours since I’d eaten a breakfast of oatmeal and maple syrup with black coffee and pomegranate juice.

Hey @bella,

Was cholesterol just done by a finger pick?  That's pretty neat to provide that, any other markers tested?
