Carnivore and Bile Acid Malabsorption
Quote from Sarabeth on March 16, 2023, 1:23 pmIt's a challenge to judge someone's current diet by how they look right now. Great bone structure etc. depends soooooo much on generational nutritional factors, and most/many of us are not so luckily endowed....while some people got lucky rolls of the dice and look awesome despite a terrible diet and abusing their bodies. It's not fair!!
Sometimes it comes down to personal experience...I was a vegetarian for the first thirty years of my life (with several years of veganism), and for the whole time, even though my health was declining (and especially after giving birth to and nursing two children), and throughout this time, I thought smugly, "I'm so slender, and my skin and hair are so healthy! It's because I'm a vegetarian!"
Even when my health was in the toilet all the way (terrible mental health and hormonal challenges when I crashed after three years of GAPS and hard-core meat-eating combined with nearly zero starch and tons of colorful veggies and dairy and liver, in varying macronutrient permutations), I was STILL slender and had great skin, and now I could only feel confused by it all, because this was supposed to be BETTER than vegetarianism.
Fast forward to now, I still weigh exactly the same - I seem to be fortunate to have other achilles heels! - and my mental health has really never been better, all things considered, and I'm immensely grateful...but the Vitamin A detox has done a number on my facial skin, and my hair isn't quite as nice as it used to be. Maybe it's just middle age! But it's hard not to notice this, and to constantly wish for optimization in ways that are different from all those years ago when I knew I was unwell, but I still looked great! 🙂 Sigh....

Quote from Andrew B on March 17, 2023, 1:30 am@audrey It makes sense to me that if we increase bowel movements and bile then there will be a bit more going into the skin from the leakiness in the system. More will be being detoxed but the body probably manages it that our skin can take a little more bile flow and toxin removal from the phosphatidylcholine. I can remove the eggs and it doesnt help my skin because the bile flow is still better. I do think leakiness has reduced also because I can eat loads of fibre and potatoes without any weird cramps. I feel I'm dumping a lot of Vit A now that made me look like an amateur before 🙂

Quote from Audrey on March 17, 2023, 5:51 am@andrew-b do you think there's a possibility that phosphatidylcholine can make the facial skin a bit salty when detoxing and bile flow is stronger? A weird question maybe 🙂 Or could this simply be a dehydration issue? Curious

I'm also curious how you feel when detoxing a lot of Vitamin A these days @andrew-b? Does detoxing affect you differently now? I used to get a lot of anxiety when dumping but not so much these days.

@audrey The way I'm getting affected is by a lack of sleep right through the night. It's improving which might provide answers eventually. Some weirder dreams again which is a good sign to me. I think a lot less anxiety these days. Only a third caffeinated coffee tends to turn me a bit OCD again. I found a good decaffeinated coffee I should really buy again. I'm very calm too and noises arent bothering me so much. It looks to me like the choline helped the neurological problems a lot. Extra beef or very high fibre tends to ramp up the detox again by creating itchiness at night. That's one way I can tell it's still strong detox.

There were times when I would sweat at night from the detox. This is less obvious now. Perhaps the iodine and selenium in eggs helps the thyroid in a direct and indirect way through better liver health. I use quite a bit of salt but not noticed this. Stronger detox I suspect and some related sweating of salt.

@audrey, that is interesting. I haven't ever (well, not recently) tried limiting other fats...I might try that, although I don't limit it for others in the family (kids) so it will be tricky to do so exactly. I have been eating 2-4 eggs per day over the past several months, and while I have noticed interesting improvements (in varicose veins, initially an improvement with constipation, followed by an entire month of WORSE constipation, followed now by a seeming leveling-out-of-elimination...), I have also noticed some less-great symptoms just staying not-great, such as my facial skin.
I tried a two-month experiment supplementing Vitamin B12 back in October, before adding eggs back in, which (the B12) was initially an attempt to help my terrible/receding/painful gums. This did seem to help the gum pain a bit, and it did great things for my hair, which grew more thickly and got shiny and much nicer. But my FACE! I broke out in terrible acne, like I did back at the beginning of the Vitamin A Detox, and after two months, I finally gave up. My pimples have subsided mostly, but my face is just blotchy and not gorgeous looking. 🙁
I am convinced that B vitamins are a key piece of this puzzle, but each of them is tricky in its own way, and I have in the past had a terrible reaction to B complex (and specifically to folate, which gave me horrendous panic attacks). This was years before I started this vitamin A detox piece of the puzzle, but I've been hesitant to supplement B complex since then. I have successfully use B6/p5p along with zinc before the A detox, and I added in B1 and b2 and biotin for a time. Last summer, I found some improvement from certain things with high dose thiamine, but it seemed like time to stop once my sleep began to get disturbed. Then I tried the b12....with those mixed results...

@andrew-b have you considered adding some extra magnesium back in to see if sleep improves?

Quote from Audrey on March 19, 2023, 1:57 am@sarabeth-matilsky I notice when I eat 2 eggs my skin gets immediately worse, drier as in zero oil in my skin. 1 egg seems to be okay as long as I don't overdo added extra fats. But I am also pretty convinced too that the B's are a piece of the puzzle. I've started to supplement low doses of B2 and Biotin to my B1 and B12. It is too early to tell but I think it is helping my skin feel smoother again, though I do fear anything that might ramp up detox and I think Biotin ramps up detox, it gives me a headache, which I try to balance with magnesium.
