cherries

Somewhere along the way (GOSH my mind is blank) but I seem to remember reading about the evolution of plants to have pigments to take advantage (or to protect from) the wavelengths of the sun in our atmosphere.

Gosh just think!  The whole VA thing could lead one right down the rabbit hole of our beginnings and all that implies.  My conspiracy mind starts to think about how maybe that is why we have a smoke screen of confusion between us and VA understanding.

@tim-2 I don’t appreciate you picking out a comment I made on a day I had brain fog & picking it to bits - we’re not in court here! I was obviously talking about betacarotene - this is the topic I did all my research on last year - not generally carotenoids which are very complex. I find your style rather aggressive sometimes. I prefer kindness. We are trying to recover from illness here not prove who is the cleverest person. I’m going to take a break from reading/posting on here I think as rather than enjoying interesting debates & supportive comments I’m just getting annoyed now.

@jaj Please don't feel bad. I find that releasing VA and caretonoids(whatever that means) make me extremely depressed AND full of rage! At least I feel both! 🙂

You make a very important point which is we are here to find a way out of this, to help others find a way out of this, and to receive support from others who suffer like (or unlike) we do.

This is not a game. I bless you all and myself with all my heart, the part that he's not been burnt to ashes by VA.

Your contribution is very important @jaj, do not go please. We need you.

In general, I don’t think carotenoids are safe for us. A few of my reasons for that position are:

Several young men have contacted me who had been regularly eating sweet potatoes and went on to develop eczema. Likewise, several mothers I’ve talked to have seen the same thing happen in their kids. One was regularly giving her daughter carrot juice and her daughter has developed severe eczema on her hands and face. The same happened for another young boy that I know.

And, many other people have commented that their skin has turned yellow or orange. As did the carrot juice for Steve Jobs. So, it looks like the carotenoids are being preferentially stored in the adipose layer of the skin, or at least it’s more visible there.

Then look at the catastrophic decline in the Okinawan’s and the Australian Aboriginal’s health since they’ve adopted sweet potatoes as a staple food. It’s clearly not working out too well. Likewise, for the Chinese community in the CBC news report I shared before.

I had a rather disastrous response to lutein/zeaxanthin. Realistically, I’d say that it took me a year or more to fully recover from that setback.

Back in 2013 I had a good friend (age 50ish) who had started drinking carrot juice. He had never smoked in his life. Six months or so after starting the carrot juice he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Three short months later he was dead.

But, there are many other variables affecting the potential dangers (and rate of uptake) of the carotenoids. Probably the biggest being how much fat is included in the same meal. Even more dangerous are some of the seed oils like canola and corn oil because the carotenoids are already emulsified in them.

Anyways, for me, the carotenoids are off the menu.

Would flaxseed oil and avocado oil also have carotenoids already emulsified in them?  Thanks, Fred.

Hi @Fred,

Flaxseed contains lutein and zeaxanthin, but it is now being genetically modified to produce other carotenoids.

I'm not sure about avocado oil.

One of the Dolores Claiborne type things my mom used to say was that cherries gave you the s___s.    I didn't find this quite true for myself for most of my life, though they did seem to get things moving a bit until this past year.   They now do what my mom says.  My gut feels like it is in turmoil when I eat cherries.   I don't eat that much fruit these days compared to what I used to but probably an amount that is similar to many people in the US, - a banana, a couple of tablespoons of blueberry jam and a date or 2 everyday and maybe some strawberries on occasion during the season and none of them make my gut twist like cherries do.   These were red cherries.

That is funny @romaine, in the procession of the fruits  of the year we are currently on strawberries.  I really felt like eating a bunch when we got our first pint. I got wicked gas.   I was closed in a small room and the gas was so bad it set off the smoke detector :).

I think that the procession of fruits is something natural to take part in (if you can (health wise) and you have the taste for it, maybe it does something for ya.  😉    We can be like content bears.

In the past, I've wondered if we are also meant to get a tiny dose of what is in the pit or seeds of fruits.  (it has been suggested that the the poison there is helpful somehow against some diseases).

I think the plant estrogen in flax is even worse than the carotenoids. It has more than any other plant food. I have posted about it several times on my blog and I've heard from people who have had bad side effects from it. (One women had had 7 miscarriages, another had 3 in one year after starting a Paleo diet with lots of flax. She already had 2 children, so never had problems with fertility before. When she stopped the flax, she had a successful pregnancy.)

Plants make chemicals that mimic mammalian hormones as a way to disrupt our reproductive systems and cut down on the number of predators (like us) who eat them or their seeds. The most common side effect seems to be hot flashes, but the biggest danger is to the fetuses of pregnant women. It causes miscarriages and birth defects, including deformities in the genitals of male babies.

Flax and soy are often used as supplements to help with menopause symptoms, but if you need estrogen, I think it should be prescribed by a doctor and taken at the proper dosage. https://www.carbwarscookbooks.com/wheat-belly-cookbook-review-is-flax-the-new-wheat/
