I think I have been taurine deficient my whole life. I have never eaten anything that has lot's of taurine and some people are not good at making taurine internally. Plus I use to take isotretinoin for years and after isotretinoin I started mega dosing vitamin A from fish liver oil and then eating 2,2 pounds of sweet potatoes every day for years. So yeah, I have majorly f*cked myself, no wonder I now suffer from this neurological disease.

@samuli

It seems likely that as long as we've been VA toxic we've been deficient in a whole range of important nutrients, taurine included. Humans don't synthesize much taurine, we need to eat meat to get optimal amounts, another strike against vegetarianism.

Don't blame yourself, most attempts at healthy eating involve VA self poisoning, so many bad internet gurus to listen to.

@tim-2 ‘most attempts at healthy eating involve vA self poisoning’ - so true. This makes me really sad.

I trained as a nutritional therapist 2015-2018 but couldn’t complete the practical modules as I had to care for my (suddenly ill) Mum away from London. Then I discovered vA toxicity & couldn’t complete the practical modules because morally I couldn’t recommend a diet to real clients that would get me a pass from the examiners but would lead them to vA toxicity.

I find it difficult watching all my lovely & very well meaning nutritional therapist friends recommending diets that will lead to disaster long term - sweet potato & butternut squash soup anyone? I’ve tried to inform them about my discovery but I’ve largely failed. I think when people have put a huge effort & large amount of money into training they don’t want to hear that some of the fundamentals are incorrect. I understand this. However the truth is the truth & ‘do no harm’ more important than anything imo.

@jaj

That's really annoying about the training. Even if you got the qualification I suspect many clients would be suspicious of you if you recommended low VA diets! If they proceeded with the diet many would likely get confused or angry when they started detoxing. Maybe I'm wrong but I would anticipate this.

Ask your friends what the largest trials with beta-carotene found. When they um and ah inform them that the trials needed to be ended early due to an increase in mortality from cancer and heart disease in the carotene groups!

LOL at the soup.

@tim-2 thanks. I think you are totally right. The vA detox is tricky & long term so not user friendly at the moment. Hopefully this will improve in time maybe by getting the soluble fibre going before the reduction in vA? I don’t know.

Why soluble fiber, how does it benefit vitamin A toxicity?

@jaj

Soluble fibre increases the loss of bile acids but it doesn't absorb all the retinoid laden bile. Even if it did I think a lot of the symptoms occur due to the release of va, not just due to enterohepatic circulation. I think detoxing va will always be a long and difficult process for those that start with Hypervitaminosis A.

@samuli the soluble fibre is supposed to help the body expel the retinoid ladened bile & prevent the reabsorption of toxicity. If you increase soluble fibre in your diet (beans, lentils, oats) do it slowly or you get a vA dump (don’t do what I did!!).

@tim-2 you may be right. I think the soluble fibre helps once equilibrium is established. It’s quite powerful as I ended up inducing a vA dump that made me quite ill!

@jaj

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying soluble fibre isn't an important part of detox, I just think that it doesn't fully protect against detox symptoms. It seems like people often tend to actually get ongoing worsening of symptoms after they start consuming more beans.

@jaj and @tim-2 I think more beans and lentils, after craving for them actually, has increased detox symptoms very much for me and my husband.
