My progress

PreviousPage 6 of 18Next

My father is on some sort of odd therapy and he gets hot flashes.   They aren't just for us fifty plus ladies!  haha

My tube is fixated to my hip with a special sticker. I did not have issues with it. Everything is re-dressed once weekly. When I started working out again, sweating a LOT, the skin under that sticker started itching and burning like mad. When it was removed to be changed, the skin underneath was bright red and swollen, and extremely itchy. Eczema of course. I never took a picture of it, I should have. Because fast forward 3-4 days later, the whole red area was now all crusty and flaky and itchy and burning. Didnt take a picture then either, but today I did. What is left of the peeling area at least. It just fascinates me what vit A can do and look like trying to penetrate the skin. Because what else could it be, causing such redness almost bleeding, and then peeling large skin flakes off together with the typical itchiness and burning sensation when scratching. So I am attaching a pic here for my own amusement.

Also, hairs in a mole by my ear has turned white. I notice this because I tend to pluck it off. Turning white was a pretty recent thing else I would have noticed it sooner. Dr G is probably right in sunshine and heat/exercise being aggitators. I have been doing more of both last month and it has not helped my detox, but probably caused some worse effects, like the eczema, worsening heels, white mole hairs and more dry itchy skin around eyes and eyebrows. Time to take a chill pill, in the shadows.

The pic is upside down.

Before I went on the detox diet last summer and the summer before that I got a eczema type rash on my hands and feet after spending significant time in the sun.  Thankfully it was self limiting to about 3 weeks even though I continued to hike outdoors on occasion  through the rest of the summer but I am convinced that the sun and also maybe the heat triggered the rash.   I have been on the low A diet for about 9 months now but haven't made as much improvement as many others have reported and have been avoiding time in sun for now though will be making trips to see family on the coast soon and am worried that we will be spending much time outside in the sun and that the rash will come back.   I haven't been excercising because I am usually just so tired with bad headaches and achy feet since last August.

The one good thing about our upcoming trip is that it is at sea level.  I live at 5,000 feet and this past year when I have stayed at sea level, I've slept longer (my main issue is insomnia which triggers bad headaches).   I have lived near the Rocky Mountains for over 20 years but I guess my body still is not acclimated to the lower oxygen levels.    I have not made this observation before (I am not that observant sometimes), so I'm not sure if the vitamin A toxicity issue and/or the detox diet might interact with altitude and oxygen levels for me.

I hope you get better soon Liz.  You have been through so much!

@romaine keep us updated regarding the rash. I think in my case the sticker prevented the A to leave the skin, I could not wash it off, so it just marinated under there... I dont think I ever had a contact eczema before, yes from nickel as a child. But that did not behave like this one at all.

I just wanted to add that i prioritize organic due to glyphosate, especially grains and animal flesh. If you havent tried that, maybe it could be something to try to see if it helps you 🙂

Thank you for the help.  I have been eating mostly organic for the last 7 months, not all though.  I recently switched form organic black beans to conventional black eyed peas because I can't find them organic where I live.  I am trying to reduce oxalates and black eyed peas are low, not sure which might be worse for me right now, glyphosate or oxalates.    I don't eat organic bananas either, do you think it is important to though?    The beef and rice I eat are organic.

@romaine, I have no idea regarding bananas. I cannot find conventional ones where I live so I never thought of it. But banans are heavily sprayed giving banana farmers diseases, a swedish filmning team made a documentary about it some years ago, can't remember the name of it though. I guess it is up to one's budget. I just buy everything I can organic, with my endometriosis I am too afraid to take any chances. Needles to say my monthly food budget is indanely high xD. The oxalate thing I find very interesting as well, how long have you been doing it? My achilles is chocolate which ofc is also heavy in oxalate. A tough relationship. We break up a LOT only to find our way back to each other (dark not milk). It is a very destructive relationship though. However, i might have found a substitute. Banana pie. Seriously addictive. Might post the recipe 🤔

I think I have been doing low oxalate for around 3 weeks.  I may have been dumping too much oxalate when I cut out all moderate and high oxalate foods since at first I had really bad insomnia, worse than usual, so I eased up and included some brazil nuts back in which I like both for the taste and selenium and hopefully safe fat.   My sleep improved but only for 3 days then went very bad again.   Not sure if it was because I had to switch to a different brand of brazil nuts due to availablitly ( oh, the minutia!) or if it was because I had also been cutting out white rice because I wanted to try subbing in more of the more nutrient dense foods I already eat.  After eating white rice again for 3 days my sleep has improved.   Maybe I should cut out all fruit, but the thought of no bananas or apples is very unappealling  (pun not intended).

I didn't know about the bananas and spraying.   The organic ones don't seem that more expensive so I'll buy those instead.

I’ve been eating low oxalate too for about that long. It really seems to make a huge difference. I’m not sure if I’ve had some minor oxalate dumping or A detox but I definitely feel tons better now that I’m off chocolate, beans and nuts!

@bella and @romaine, I now think my severe back pain is related to high oxalates and not vit A.

Friday I was out with work, and had some dark chocolate and a rhubarb juice. The morning after I was really sore and stiff. Lile from nothing to bam! I did not have any A foods at all that day despite eating out.

Yesterday I had dark chocolate again and also almonds/marzipan and today stiffness is worse and starting getting sore.

Do any of you have a good source of low oxalate food list as interwebz seems to be very divergent? Chickpea is the only bean I eat and that is moderate, on one list at least. Else lentils should be okay. White rice constipates me so cannot have that as a staple. White wheat flour has been a thought, besides from A approved fruits.

Any input would ve hugely appreciated.

The best low oxalate list I’ve found is through the yahoo group Trying_Low_Oxalates.

It’s free you just have to request to join to get the most up to date list. There’s also a Facebook group by the same name.
